STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED
The Town of Shandaken at 12:00pm (Noon) today is declaring a State of Emergency for the entire municipality.
Following a meeting with emergency personnel this morning, the Town has declared a State of Emergency due to possible threats from Hurricane Sandy and its remnants. Residents are advised the Town is expecting high wind gusts up to 70 mph starting Sunday evening through the night into Monday October 29. High winds may cause downed trees and power lines due to already saturated soil conditions. We are also anticipating rain beginning light overnight and becoming heavier throughout the day on Monday until afternoon on Tuesday when rains are expected to continue, but lighten up.
Residents are asked to stock up on supplies (water, food, medical supplies, flashlights, batteries and fuel (vehicles and home)) as best they can prior to the event. Residents in flood-prone areas are asked to be on alert and, if feeling threatened, should try to evacuate to higher ground. Belleayre Mountain will open as an emergency shelter on Monday to house residents overnight, if needed. Residents that are in need of emergency assistance or in need of special assistance in order to evacuate should contact the Shandaken Police Department at 688-9902. Emergency information and supplies will be available at your local firehouse beginning Monday.
Emergency crews will be monitoring the situation throughout the Town over the next several hours. If you hear the fire alarm sound throughout the Town, the Firehouses will be manned to assist any resident or visitor.
Information will be posted at your firehouse as well as on the Town website and Facebook page as we progress. Please check on neighbors to help us expedite door-to-door checks, if necessitated.
Starting Monday morning (8am) residents can call the Town Clerks Office (845) 688-5004 for more information.
Please be diligent and please stay safe!
