David Ilku Performs in NYC

For those of you who will be in the city this week WCA member David Ilku will continue to perform with his comedy group Unitard in House of Tards. The details are below. I have caught Unitard in the past and they are hilarious. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood.

The Woodstock Fringe Playwrights Unit is a playwriting workshop and laboratory, now in its ninth year. The core belief of the Playwrights unit is: The act of creation is an act of courage. A group of playwrights, composers, lyricists, book writers and actors assemble every other week to share and develop new work. The culture of the Playwrights Unit is one of community, nourishment, honor, mutual respect, and professionalism.

Eleven Playwrights Unit playwrights will be represented in the two programs of new short plays. A splendid company of actors, most local to the Hudson Valley, have come together to read this eclectic and exciting collection of new plays. The plays are funny, sad, outrageous, moving , witty and literate.

STS Playhouse was founded in 1976 and has mounted over 70 full-scale productions. Its current home on 10 Church Street was built in 1887 by the International Order of Odd Fellows and is now a charming air conditioned 150-seat theatre.

Woodstock Fringe was founded in 2003 by Wallace Norman. Woodstock Fringe was in residence at the Byrdcliffe Theatre for a decade where Wallace Norman produced theWoodstock Fringe Festival of Theatre & Song.

Murmurs and Incantations tells the story of Ben Levitts, a one-time impassioned activist and rising art star in 1980s New York, now a creatively blocked, middle-aged art professor. We meet Ben when, much to his surprise, he has been invited to show at a contemporary art center in Poland. While reticent to visit his ancestral homeland, Ben accepts what could be the last big opportunity of his career.

Despite his best efforts, Ben is distracted by history. A series of visions and ghostly visitations stir up a painful past. Things are further complicated by the prospects of romance. Still, the journey fuels in Ben a last-ditch effort to test his creative powers, and to find an ancestral and a personal voice.

Harrowing, poignant and irreverently funny, Murmurs and Incantations explores the inspiration, the anguish and the responsibility of being an artist. It sharply examines the ways in which identity, cultural history and personal baggage affect, impede and shape the creative process. Phun In Phoenicia Tonight

There are several events in Phoenicia tonight that are worth mentioning. The first is the Shandaken Theatrical Society benefit. Many WCA members are involved with the theatre. It is a wonderful asset to the community! Here is the details on that event.

“Songs From the Silver Screen”
The Red Carpet Leads To Phoenicia

On Saturday, November 5, the STS Playhouse off Main Street in Phoenicia will be host to Songs From the Silver Screen, a gala benefit concert for the 124-year-old theatre.

Renowned jazz cabaret duo Ann Osmond & Dennis Yerry are joined by Grammy nominated writer-performer Robert Burke Warren for a show featuring an eclectic mix of memorable movie music, spanning many decades and styles.

“From Fred Astaire to Judy Garland, Tom Jones to Dionne Warwick, Irving Berlin to Harold Arlen and Burt Bacharach to Simon & Garfunkel; we’ve had such a great time compiling this world-class material,” say Osmond and Yerry. “And it’s a real treat collaborating with Robert Warren. We relish every opportunity to work together.”

Last year, Songs From the Silver Screen was performed for a sell-out crowd in Woodstock. The trio is excited about the opportunity to share it with a larger audience. “For those who did catch the show last year and look forward to the encore performance, we are reprising much of the original program and have added several new “reel” surprises as well,” adds Yerry.

Ann Osmond is a singer and actor with roots in the theatre and Dennis Yerry, an accomplished jazz pianist and composer. Their unique arrangements and rich harmonies have a fresh energy and an air of timeless elegance. Robert Burke Warren, best known locally as Uncle Rock, is a performer whose experience extends from rock and roll clubs to the Victoria Palace Theatre in London's West End.

The concert is a benefit for The STS Raise The Roof Fund. “This has been a very tough year for our community, this benefit will allow us to make much needed repairs to our building” says STS Board President Linda Burkhardt. “Without repairs we could experience severe damage this winter.”

The concert is on November 5 at 8 pm. Reserved seating tickets are $20 and can be purchased at STSPlayhouse.com. Drinks and refreshments will be available and everyone will have a chance to win valuable door prizes. For more info call STS at 845-688-2279.

Woodstock Fringe Festival Opens

The Woodstock Fringe Festival opens it's 2011 season soon with many exciting productions. Woodland Valley's own Noni Connor will be featured in a new one-act play "Finding Elvis". Here is the release from the festival about this work.

"This year's Festival is lead by two gifted artists, Arian Johns and Mindy Pfeffer who are the 2011 WoodStock Fringe Playwrights/Producers in residence. They have been working tirelessly to bring us an exciting season of new work. Ariana and Mindy will offer two one-act plays FINDING ELVIS, by Mindy Pfeffer (with Noni Connor, Mindy Pfeffer and Dana Patton, directed by Nicola Sheara) and MOONBITE, a montage of radiant lunacy by Ariana Johns. These plays were developed in the Woodstock Fringe Playwrights Unit."

Guys & Dolls At STS This Weekend

This Friday and Saturday night STS will be giving a performance of Guys and Dolls to benefit it's 'Raise the Roof' fund. The show stars “Uncle Rock” - Robert Warren, Phoenicia Festival of the Voice' performer, Woodland Valley's own Jay Brammen Jr. and Chuck Sokolowski, Former Broadway and regional theatre star Ann Davies, fresh from her critical success in Closer Than Ever – Amy Wallace, mother and daughter Katie and Lucia Legnini and husband and wife theatre veterans Jessica and Brian Sherman. The evening’s narrator and color commentator is Phoenicia’s own Dave Pillard owner of The Tender Land Home store on Main Street Phoenicia. Musical Director is Maria Todoro. Here are the details.

The STS Playhouse in Phoenicia needs a new roof.  The stage floor has holes in it, the windows need to be replaced, they need new curtains and there are many other repairs needed at the 123 year old space.  But how will they raise the money during a difficult economic time? This theatre has a twist on an old idea.
 
During intermission the theatre will be raffling gift certificates but this raffle is different.  “We know that area merchants are always asked to donate free things to many good causes.  What we wanted to do was stimulate business and help the merchants by asking for vouchers for a percentage off or money towards a larger purchase.  So far we have had a great response,”   says producer of the benefit, Michael Mills.  “We are calling it the Economic Stimulus Raffle and so far 30 local businesses including Woodstock Meats, The Emerson, Sweet Sue’s. The Phoenicia Belle and Oriel 9 have donated vouchers for each evening’s performance.”
 
“I’m in favor of helping a local non-profit organization keep a roof over its head.   The STS Playhouse and the other cultural things help make the town more vital.  This idea could be good for Phoenicia ” adds Tom Fraser who has donated 2 vouchers good for a free night stay with a paid night at the Phoenicia Belle B&B on Main Street Phoenicia.
 
In a show of bi-partisan support area politicians will act as raffle “officials” each night. On Friday evening Republican Shandaken Town Supervisor Rob Stanley will pull the winning numbers and on Saturday Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach, will do the honors.
 
“I like to support local causes and because we are a new business this idea may introduce us to new customers,” says Erica Makulich, chef and co-owner Yum-Yum Noodleshop a new restaurant and take-out in Woodstock.  They have donated two, 2 for 1 vouchers for dinner.

Closer Than Ever at STS Opening this Saturday

The cast of "Closer Than Ever" has assembled here in Phoenicia and are in rehearsals for this Saturday's opening. Below are bios and photos of the musical director, director, cast and crew. Opening day is part of the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice. "Closer Than Ever" is a special production and will benefit STS's "Raise The Roof Fund." A powerful and witty musical revue by Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire, the piece is directed by WCA member Ricarda O'Conner. The play runs from Aug 14 at 2:30, Aug 17, 18, 19, 20 at 8 p.m. and Aug 21 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15/$13 students, members, and seniors. Call 845-688-2279 for reservations.

Amy Wallace appeared in the World Premiere of “The Kafka Project” an “Our Shoes Are Red” production at the Ohio Theater in NYC. Regional theatre credits include Little Red Riding Hood in “Into the Woods”, Nancy in “Oliver!”, and Maria in “Man of La Mancha”. She has served as the Artistic Director at STS Playhouse in Phoenicia for the past year and a half where she directed “The Miser” and “Godspell”. Amy has a BA in Acting from Muhlenberg College and also studied at NYU and The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Amy is grateful for her roles as both a performer and Artistic Administrator of The Phoenicia Festival of the Voice.






















Alex Agard - is delighted to be a part of the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice. Favorite credits include Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing…Forum, Beast in Beauty and the Beast and Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime. In February, Alex concluded a 2-year run playing the role of Kiume in Festival of the Lion King at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, performing the role over 1,400 times. Ricarda O’Conner (Director) began her theatrical life as a dancer-singer-actress in New York City. After performing in musicals across the United States and in Europe, her career took a sudden turn when she was asked---at the last minute---to direct and choreograph Slaughter on Tenth Avenue for the Chautauqua Festival Ballet. Ricarda adored the creative process, as well as collaborating with 30 dancers and a symphony orchestra. Her ballet was enthusiastically received by an audience of 8,000. A new course was set.
As choreographer or director-choreographer, Ricarda worked Off-Broadway in New York and also in American regional theatre. Her musicals include Closer Than Ever for the Eastman Opera Theatre, My Fair Lady for the Candlewood Playhouse, Kismet for Equity Library Theatre, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and Marry Me a Little for the New American Theatre, The Sunset Gang for the Jewish Repertory Theatre, and Gifts of the Magi for the Lamb’s Theatre.
In 2007---after nearly 40 years in New York City---Ricarda moved upstate to the Catskill Mountains with her husband, Michael Ottavi. They are now happy full-time residents of Phoenicia, NY.
Ricarda is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

















Eric Thomas Johnson (Musical Director) is an award-winning composer with premieres of his works in major cities across the country and abroad, including New York, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Innsbruck (Austria), to name a few. He has also worked professionally as music director, pianist, and arranger in many capacities, including work as producer/co-arranger on a recently released children’s album (Going Green! – available nationwide). He was last seen as music director for Theater Ten Ten’s winter production of The Cradle Will Rock, and he received a 2009 AUDELCO award nomination for “Outstanding Musical Direction” in Harlem Repertory Theatre’s production of The Wiz. He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in Music from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Vanderbilt University, respectively. Ray Recht (Set and Lighting Design), Broadway designs include The Flowering Peach, Trick, Slab Boys, The Babe, and national tours of Mrs. Klein, Sarafina, Annie, and Jesus Christ Superstar, over 20 Off-Broadway productions, such as Collected Stories, Marc Salem’s Mind Games, Mrs. Klein and over 200 shows for many regional theaters. Internationally he designed for Wien Staatsoper Ballet, Stratford Festival Ontario, and Manitoba Theatre Centre. Additionally he has been production designer for Feature Films, Television shows and Commercials. Mr. Recht is a Professor of Theatre and Coordinates the Design/Tech Theater Program at Marymount Manhattan College, and is a member of United Scenic Artists-Local 829.
