New Cookbook

The lovely and talented Rebecca Ffrench came out with a new cookbook recently. The book is called Whole Protein Vegetarian. Just like her other books  it is filled with fantastic and creative recipes from Rebecca's kitchen.

Also, the photography in the book was done by another one of Woodland Valley's own, Josh Holz. It looks like Josh is following in his Dad's footsteps and has decided on pursuing a creative career path. Nice work, Josh!

HOLZ HOLLYWOOD In Woodstock

Here is an excerpt from a book entitled The Catskills by T. Morris Longstreth.  It was written in 1915.  I was acquainted with him at Haverford College (our mutual alma mater) a few years before his death in 1975 at the age of 89.  He wrote many books and magazine articles on a wide variety of subjects, but this is a delightful essay on his roaming through the Catskills.  You can see the whole book at    http://catskillarchive.com/tc/

here is his take on Woodland Valley:

Woodland Valley was once and better named Snyder's Hollow. Some lily-livered namester with more sentimentality than sense did ill to deprive the late Snyder of his due. If he first settled in it, he was a discerning man and deserves the credit. If an impersonal name had to be found for the smiling curves and beckoning aisles of the valley, the first ass that brayed might have better taken Hee Haw Hollow to christen it with than the school-girlish and indistinguishable title of Woodland, where every other valley is woodland too.

This valley is a wander-way of sheer delight. You can loaf along it in the sunshine and watch the trout, or you can visit the little colony and talk with its founder, or explore into its stream enlivened recesses. At its head the Wittenberg is its dark guardian, and Cross and Pleasant stand. From the last a ridge runs out a protecting arm along the entire valley, while on its western side great Panther sends out buttress after buttress to shelter it f rom storms. Into it flows the Panther Kill, another cherubic, laughing brook, wilful as an Indian child. The vistas up these valley arms are altogether lovely. I have yet to find a fellow tramp who has not left part of his heart up Woodland Valley.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig

I moved to Woodland Valley with my family last September, and whenever I meet some of the great folks who live here, they ask me where we came from.

That’s when I come to a great, screeching halt.

It might seem like a relatively easy question to answer, but for us it isn’t, and not because we’re in the Witness Protection Program and have forgotten some of the facts in our new biographies.

Instead, when asked this, we stop to consider. Should we say Pennsylvania, the last state we were in just before we crossed into New York? Or Oregon, the state we spent the largest block of time in? How about South Dakota, simply because we had so much fun there?

In 2013 my family and I lived on the road for seven months, driving a total of 35,000 miles. We didn’t really live anywhere. Or, we lived everywhere.

Let me explain.

I am an author who took a very long time to get published. Although my debut novel came out last year, it was actually the eighth book I had written. All told, it took thirteen years from the time I first began setting down words on a page to finally seeing a book of mine on the shelves. And during that decade-plus there were many near misses, close calls, and wretched disappointments.

There were also many changes in our lives. When I started trying to get published, my husband and I didn’t have kids yet. I remember loving grandparents-to-be raising concerns and leaving articles about falling fertility rates around in hard-to-miss places.

“Should we start trying?” I asked my husband back then.

“But you’re going to be published any day now,” he replied. “And then who will have time for a baby?”

Those babies were seven and five by the time I was finally offered my first book deal.

Since the only thing harder than getting published is trying to stay that way, my husband and I knew we would have to give this thing our all once my book finally came out. Hence was the idea for the World’s Longest Book Tour born.

We “car-schooled” our kids, visiting 45 states and about 500 bookstores, libraries, and book clubs. Oh, and of course, Mt. Rushmore, Gettysburg, and the Henry Ford Museum for the car buff in the backseat.

It was an unparalleled adventure, but the only thing that could top it was finding our way to a beautiful home in the Valley. We’re very glad to have settled here, and already looking forward to being back next September.

You see, I have another novel coming out at the end of April. And it’s time to hit the road again.

Jenny Milchman’s debut novel, Cover of Snow, was chosen as an IndieNext and Target Pick, and nominated for a Mary Higgins Clark award. Jenny’s second novel, Ruin Falls, is coming out in April and she will hit the road with her family on the second multi-month book tour, kicking it off at her new hometown bookstore, The Golden Notebook.

Reading By Bethany Saltman Dec 28th

WCA member Bethany Saltman will be doing a reading on the Saturday after Christmas in Margaretville. Below is the email Bethany sent out regarding the event. Sounds like a great night to me!!

Dear Friends,

If you are looking for something fun to do the weekend after Christmas, please consider attending this groovy event at the Openeye Theater in Margaretville on Saturday, December 28th (at 7 pm) and Sunday, December 29th (at 2 pm). The press release is attached, but in a nutshell: it's a bunch of holiday-inspired writing read by the authors or actors. I am reading an essay I wrote called "The Food of the Gods with a Recipe for Mystical Gravy"about learning to cook from my dad. My essay is forthcoming in the book The Cassoulet Saved my Marriage: True Tales of Food, Family and How We Learn to Eat, edited by Caroline Grant and Lisa Catherine Harper, published by Roost in March 2013 (more about the book is below, as well, in case you are interested!).

I would love to see you there. And out and about, as well.

The Little Yellow Trolley Car is the true story of a little trolley who brought passengers and freight from one small town to another between 1896 and 1927. The book has bold, colorful paper cut illustrations and uses engaging sounds of the trolley's travels to describe her long ago life in operation, sitting in a farmer's yard for sixty years, and the sounds of her restoration. You can cheer with her crowd of passengers when at last she runs again!

The book will particularly appeal to ages 2-8 and to the adults who read with those young people!

We will be running our MINI RR TRAINS (for exhibition) mid-day, all weekend.

The ESRM is free but donations are certainly welcome.

Release of Sweet Home

Yesterday, April 16th, was official release of Sweet Home: Over 100 Heritage Desserts and Ideas for Preserving Family Recipes, a cookbook written by Woodland Valley resident Rebecca Miller Ffrench and photographed by fellow Woodland Valley resident Philip Ficks. Peter Occolowitz (a THIRD Woodland Valley resident) assisted on the book.

The cookbook was inspired by a recipe journal that belonged to Rebecca’s great-grandmother. The tattered pages of the journal began an entire dialogue between Rebecca and her grandmother about their family heritage—and thus a whole journey began.
