On Saturday, August 8, Flying Cat Music presents the dynamic Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio in Phoenicia at the Empire State Railway Museum located at 70 Lower High Street. The doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the show beginning at 7:30 prompt. Admission is $15 or $13 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling 845-688-9453.

The magic in the music of Heather Pierson is impervious to genrefication. In one three month span she was lauded in the press as both a neoclassical pianist and as the leader of a jazz quartet, but look up Heather Pierson on Sonic Bids and she's found under “Solo” “Folk” and “Acoustic.” Lone Star Magazine views Pierson as a veritable double bill, saying, “Heather is like two great acts in one, sliding from sweet acoustic Appalachian old-timey vibe with Patty Griffinesque lyrics to brassy New Orleans blues piano with a bone thrown to Bessie Smith." Heather's voice is pure and sometimes even sweet, but it also carries great power. It's a voice that could mesmerize a dragon or a dove.  A review in MainlyPiano.com captures her dynamic range, noting "Pierson’s voice is strong yet vulnerable, conveying tremendous emotional depth and passion”.

The doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the show beginning at 7:30 prompt. Admission is $12 or $10 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling 845-688-9453.

Winning Singer-Songwriter of the year in 2013 at the 11th Annual Texas Music Awards and taking home the prize for Americana Song of the Year in the Billboard International Song Contest in 2008 are just two of the many honors already bestowed on Houston based musician Matt Harlan in his relatively short career. His July concert for Flying Cat Music marks Matt's return from a European tour where his Texas tinged Folk Roots sound has earned him a loyal following. Each of the three CDs that Matt Harlan has released to date hit the #1 spot on the Euro Americana Chart, an impressive accomplishment considering that Americana music is in many ways more popular in Europe than it is here at home.

When music becomes classic, it is timeless. It feels old because it seems always to have been there and fresh because it’s not owned solely by the past. It remains vibrant in the present while temporary fads come and go. Music that is classic leaps generations and finds new homes in modern hearts. That's how it is with the music of Hannah Shira Naiman, a young woman who grew up north of Toronto, Canada. She writes songs with roots dating back hundreds of years to the mountains of Appalachia and does so astonishingly well. Hannah is not a traditional folk singer, rather she's a contemporary songwriter and performer who is heir to a magnificent tradition that she joyously upholds. Her pure gift is winning Hannah admirers of every age.

Singer/song writer Vance Gilbert will be playing this Sunday in the Flying Cat Music Series at the Empire State Railway Museum. If you like folk music I highly recommend attending this concert. Flying Cat Music is proud to launch its seventh concert year in Phoenicia with the incomparable Vance Gilbert on Sunday, March 29. The show will be at the Empire State Railway Museum located at 70 Lower High Street. The doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the show beginning at 7:30 prompt. Admission is $18 or $15 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling 845-688-9453.

Vance Gilbert is a frequent headliner at Hillsdale, New York's renowned Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. He's been featured at ten of the annual festivals, and he invariably dazzles the main stage audience. Sublime as his festival performances are, they hardly prepare one for the magic and intensity of seeing Vance play in an intimate setting like the Empire State Railway Museum. After a nearly four year absence, Vance Gilbert returns to the Phoenicia Train Station for a long anticipated encore to his 2011 show that marked the resumption of the Flying Cat Music concert series at that museum in the wake of damage done there by Hurricane Irene. Like that storm, Gilbert is a force to be reckoned with. Unlike Irene, his is very much a healing energy. And though he's more than willing to ruffle a few feathers when he blows into town, Vance does so in lovely ways.

Something To Listen To On These Cold Nights

Here is something I have been meaning to post for a while. And since we are having sub-zero nights here in the valley it would be the perfect time to stay indoors and warm your soul with some great music.

In Phoenicia a couple of months ago I met a new Woodland Valley resident, Marlan Barry. He is a musician and does classical and acoustic music recording and production. He gave me his card and I checked out his website. One of the really cool things he has been working on is recording world class musicians playing on some of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's rare musical instrument collection. There are links to these sessions on his blog (see link below). It is not the first post but you can scroll down a bit and you will see the different links to take you to the performances. They are all divine. Enjoy!

Music Circle This Saturday Oct 18th At ESRM

WCA member Dakin Morehouse sent me this message (and a message he received) regarding a special music circle this weekend. Here is what Dakin had to say.

OK pickers - in case you haven't heard ...
You're invited to come to listen or to participate in the Special Jam (see below).
Tomorrow, Saturday 2 to 4+? PM at the Phoenicia RR Station (ESRM on Lower High Street).
Very similar to our Pickin' Circles but with the Heritage Folk Music folks leading a Catskill SongFest theme.
Hope you can come!

Dakin

In honor of Ulster County Heritage Week, members of the Board and friends of Heritage Folk Music will perform songs of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley on two occasions.

On Saturday, October 18, from 2-4 p.m., we will be at the Empire State Railway Museum, 70 High Street, Phoenicia.

On Sunday, October 26, from 12 non-2 p.m., we will be at Matthewis Persen House, 74 John Street, Kingston,

These will be very informal sing-alongs/songswaps.  Come join us if you can.  Both events are free and open to the public.

Thanks,
Pat Lamanna
