Pets and COVID-19

  WCA member Allen Vella sent me this from the CDC website. There have been questions about the transmission of the virus through pets so it is good to have the current guidance on those questions.

Animals and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

- Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some cause illness in people and others cause illness in certain types of animals.

 - Coronaviruses that infect animals can become able to infect people, but this is rare.

We do not know the exact source of the current outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

 - We do not have evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19.

 - We do not have evidence to suggest that imported animals or animal products imported pose a risk for spreading the 2019 novel coronavirus in the United States.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause cold-like illnesses in people, while others cause illness in certain types of animals, such as cattle, camels, and bats. Some coronaviruses, such as canine and feline coronaviruses, only infect animals and do not infect humans.

How to stay healthy around animals -

In the United States, there is no evidence to suggest that any animals, including pets, livestock, or wildlife, might be a source of COVID-19 infection at this time. However, because all animals can carry germs that can make people sick, it’s always a good idea to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals.

 - Wash your hands after handling animals, their food, waste, or supplies.

 - Practice good pet hygiene and clean up after pets properly.

 - Take pets to the veterinarian regularly and talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s health.

Risk to pets

CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19. Further studies are needed to understand if and how different animals could be affected by COVID-19.

How to protect pets if you are sick

If you are sick with COVID-19 (either suspected or confirmed), you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. This can help ensure both you and your animals stay healthy.

When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. Avoid contact with your pet including, petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them. For more information visit: What to Do if You are Sick.

Lost Dog 2-17-20

Wallis Flood Poncic has lost her dog, Cody, in Woodland Valley. Wallis lives mid-valley on WV Road just after the Fawn Hill bridge. Mama Bear

Just as I was wondering what to post today Woodland Valley resident Jim Alessi sent me this message and photo.

"This big Momma bear was in my backyard on Saturday (see photo below). If you look close you can see one of her cubs walking behind her in the shadows. There is a second cub who climbed up a tree just out of camera view by the time I opened my window to take a picture. They were only there for two or three minutes but a thrill none the less. The mom has to be at least 275 lbs. and the cubs might be 50 lbs. each.

Saw another lone black bear that crossing Woodland Valley Road below the Woodland Valley campground on Sunday. That bear had a State Wildlife Tag in each of its ears but I couldn’t get my camera phone out fast enough to snap a picture. Guess I’m getting a little slow in my old age…

I think I saw the same bear with the two ear tags last night while I was at my neighbor's house. He was beautiful. But the tag in each ear means that he is a very badly behaved bear. When a bear gets to be a nuisance (breaking into houses, roaming in populated areas, etc) they trap him/her and tag an ear. If that bear gets into trouble again they trap them again and tag the other ear. The third time the bear gets into trouble they euthanize him/her. So let's hope this big guy stays out of trouble. 

And to close this post I would ask everyone (weekenders especially) to secure their garbage. The bears have been overturning garbage bins all along the WV road and scattering the litter everywhere. If it happens with your garbage a lot I would ask you to consider getting a bear proof metal box. 

Dog Park In Shandaken

With the beautiful weather we are having today some of you may be looking for a place you can run your fur babies off-leash. If you don't know about it already, there is a great dog park and agility center in Shandaken. It is up on Rt 42 at Glen Brook Park. There are different areas for large and small dogs and benches for you to sit and watch the activity. There are also ramps and other things to practice agility training if your dog seems inclined. So while we have this interlude of mild temperatures get out there with your furry friends. It will help both of you beat your cabin fever!

Dog Home Safely!

After two weeks in the woods, Golith, the dog that was lost from Phoenicia went home with his relieved owner today. Here is the story as I heard it. Apparently, Duane Formont had seen him last week around his place in Phoenicia and had been putting food out for him ever since. The food was gone every morning and since there are no stray animals near his house he suspected that the dog was in the area.

Yesterday he called Amy, the owner, and told her to come down and try walking around his property to see if she could lure him in. She sat there for several hours in the inclement weather but there was no sign of the dog. Marilyn Manning told her to leave her car there and put Golith's dog bed next to the car. Lo and behold they heard barking this morning and looked out and Golith was in his bed!!

Duane called Amy and she came and parked in the Pharmacy parking lot and walked to Duane's so as not to scare the dog off. She talked to him softly as she approached and then opened her car door and Golith jumped right in and went to his spot like he had never been gone.

I was told that he is in pretty good shape for a dog that was out in the woods for the last two weeks. There is some sort of small issue with one of his paws but all in all he seems just fine.

We can only speculate about where he has been. But since he was definitely seen all the way up at the end of Woodland Valley Road, I think that he went to the end, entered the woods, went up and over to Oliverea (he was sighted again there) and then back down Rt 28 again to Phoenicia. But I guess we will never really know for sure.

Wherever he has been this is such a happy ending to a nerve wracking couple of weeks. One of Amy's granddaughters said it was "a Christmas miracle" and I think she might be right!

Dog Update

Here is an update from Facebook posted by Joyce Grant about the missing dog. Seems he has traveled out of Woodland Valley but please stay on the lookout anyway.

Goliath was seen in Lanesville on Friday 12/11.. heading toward Hunter, Tannersville.. Please do not chase him.. he will run.. he is gentle but scared! Probably up by Hunter or Tannersville by now.. Please call if you see him! thanks!!

Reward for Missing Dog

Unfortunately, Goliath, the dog that went missing last week is still out there. The owner is heartbroken and is now offering a $1000.00 reward for his safe return. Goliath was last seen about 1/2 way up woodland valley road in Phoenicia, NY.on 12/2. He may still be at the end of W.Valley Road.. or continued into Oliverea or Claryville, NY. He is large 85 lb+, Old, 9yr, Arthritic, Gentle and safe to approach. This is a family dog member.. any help locating would be greatly appreciated!

Please Watch for Missing Dog

A large, friendly, German Shepard mix, dog went missing this morning from Marilyn Manning's place in Phoenicia. It was last spotted heading up Woodland Valley Rd by the ski slope. His name is Golith. He was wearing a white bandana.

Rabies & Distemper Clinic Tomorrow

Tomorrow, September 26th. there will be a RABIES & DISTEMPER clinic at Town Hall - 7209 Rt 28 - here in Shandaken. The clinic will run from 8:30am to 10 am. Rabies vaccines are $10.00. Distemper vaccines are $15.00. Cash only for shots! No appointment necessary. PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON LEADS AND CATS IN CRATES. Bring any recent vaccine records. Shandaken dog licensing will also be available during this event. Checks will be accepted for licensing.

Tag Sale To Benefit SAVE

Be sure to check out the Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort's annual Tag Sale. It is being held today at the Migliorelli Farm Stand in Mt Tremper from 10am to 5pm. All the proceeds go to the Shandaken shelter. These people do wonderful work with the dogs so get out there and buy something if you can. You can also stop by and donate if you really don't need anything else for your home (that's what I do). So go check it out and support a worthy cause!!!

Lost Dog

The dog that was found over the weekend in Mt Tremper is still at the SAVE shelter behind town hall. Below is the information from the Shandaken Facebook page. If anyone has any information please call the numbers listed in this post.  

** DOG FOUND** On Rt. 28 - Mt. Tremper at pull-off by Emerson.Saturday 4/18. Female Reddish Pitbull. Very friendly. Collar & leash NO tags. She is safe at the dog shelter but we can't find her owner. If you have any info. Call Nancy Hudler 845-688-7284 or Town Clerk 845-688 5004. PS -This photo was taken as soon as she was found and put in shelter. The choke collar was switched out for a regular collar immediately after the picture was taken. (Thanks to those that donate to SAVE - we have extra collars!)

Rabies And Distemper Clinic This Saturday

There will be a low cost rabies and distemper clinic in the Shandaken Town Hall this Saturday, November 15th from 10am to Noon.

They will vaccinate both dogs and cats. Rabies vaccines are $10.00 each and distemper vaccines are $15.00 each. CASH ONLY!

You can also get your dog licensed at the same time. No appointment is necessary. PLEASE KEEP DOGS ON LEAD AND CATS IN CRATES. Bring any recent vaccine records. For more info call the Town Clerk at 688-5004.

Happy Ending To This Dog Tale

Back at the end of September I posted about a sweet Saint Bernard that was found in Shandaken and taken in by SAVE (Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort). She was a young dog but had been in the woods quite a while and was in really bad shape. She was malnourished, dehydrated, and had severe case of scabies. She had given birth to puppies but they were not with her. They named her Angel.

Through the efforts of SAVE and others that donated to her vet care she made a wonderful recovery and was recently placed in her forever home. Wonderfully, she found a family with 2 other Saint Bernards! One is also young (between 1 and 2) so she has someone to play with right at home. The other is an older dog who likes her too. So they are just one big happy family.

Here is a photo of her with her new chums. Angel is the dog sitting up on the right hand side of the photo. Doesn't she look great! I love a happy ending!

PS - If you are thinking of getting a dog or cat remember that there are so many wonderful pets in need in our local shelters. So adopt instead of buying!

SAVE Bake Sale & Pet Portraits

This weekend is a great opportunity to have your photo taken with your pet while donating to a great cause. The Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort is having a bake sale and offering portrait sessions in an effort to raise money for the shelter. For only $10.00 you can have a photo taken with your dog, cat, hamster or parrot. The photos are by Vince Bilotta and the price includes the digital file. The green screen lets you choose the background. All proceeds go directly to the care and feeding of the dogs at the town shelter. All pets must be leashed. Here are the specifics. Woof!

Good News - Dog Found!

Heather Roberts just emailed me and said that the dog was found and is safely home with the family. That is great news!! I hate to think of a dog lost in the woods. Especially when the weather is damp and cold. But this lucky dog is safe, dry and with her family now so there is a great ending to this lost dog story. Yipee!

Lost Goat

The Cooperhood Spa on Rt 28 has lost it's approximately 200 pound female alpine goat.  She is black and gray. The animal ran away after a bear attack almost a week ago. Angel Found

This is the first photo of the dog that the people at Town Hall have named Angel right after she was found. She is now being cared for by the SAVE shelter at Town Hall. Currently she is at the vets office being treated for eye problems, malnourishment and severe skin problems. The vet feels that she was in the woods quite a while. She has had puppies (they don't know when) but there was no sign of them when she was found. They think she is a St Bernard (Mix?). She was found on Lost Clove Road in Big Indian. They think she is a fairly young dog.

This is an updated photo of Angel from the nurse at the vet. They say her eyes look better, she is clean and healing nicely. Hopefully, she will be recovered soon. SAVE, the Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort will be having a bake sale and pet portrait day on November 1st, 11am to 3pm at the Shandaken Town Hall, 7209 Rt 28, Shandaken NY. Get a framed 4x6 portrait of you and your dog, cat, hamster or parrot by Vincent Bilotta. This includes the digital file. Vincent uses a green screen so you can then pick your favorite Catskill background to make your photo even more fabulous. All the proceeds go directly to the care and vetting of the dogs in the town shelter. There is plenty of parking. All dogs brought for a portrait must be leashed.
