WCA members Joyce Burzan and her husband are also selling their home in Woodland Valley. Strangely enough, I think I looked at their house on Irondale when I was buying my home. It is a great place. Check out the listing (see link below) and pass it on to others in your circle of friends and family who are looking for a house in the best town on the planet (no prejudice here....LOL!!).

Sylvia Wolf's House For Sale

WCA member Sylvia Wolf is selling her house on Pantherkill Road. Ruth Gale has spotlighted it as the "featured home" on their website. So if you have friends or family that are looking for a place in Woodland Valley check it out. I have been in the house myself and can tell you that it is super. The views are amazing. But I am sorry to see Sylvia and Leonard leaving the valley. At least her son James will still have his property. Take a look at the listing when you have the chance.

Dennis Havel - Toads

My first reaction to these photos by Dennis Havel was that they somehow reminded me of Dennis himself. Not in looks mind you, (Dennis is much prettier) it is more of a similarity in attitude. Whatever the likeness, these photos are fabulous! Thanks for sharing them with us Dennis!!

Linda Nova Runs for Team Red Cross

I got this note from WCA member Linda Nove. She is running her first marathon this fall for team Red Cross. I thought maybe some folks in the community would like to sponsor her. Here is what she has to say about it.

Dear friends & family,

I have accepted the challenge from the Red Cross to change someone's life: my own. I am a Runner for Team Red Cross, one of the charity partners for this year's 2010 ING NYC Marathon.

I can't believe I'm actually running my first marathon! New York City, all five boroughs, 26.2 miles, on Sunday, November 7th.

This is a goal I've had for many years (and sort of kept to myself) but this year I've decided to make my dreams a reality -- while helping a great cause at the same time.

Some of you may not know this, but my husband and I were grateful recipients of emergency Red Cross assistance on two separate occasions: first on September 11th, just days after we moved into our first apartment together down on Nassau St., and again three years later when a building fire destroyed our apartment on 25th St.

As they have been with so many others in our community, throughout the country, and around the world, the Red Cross aid workers were swift, supportive, and selfless.

I'm honored to be invited to join the Red Cross team this year -- my goal is to do everything I can to raise money and awareness in support of this great organization.

I'm reaching out to family and friends like you to help me reach my fundraising goal. Please join me by making a gift. Your tax-deductable donation will make a critical difference in the lives of so many, including my own.

Just follow the links at the bottom of this email to a secure fundraising website. Every contribution is sincerely appreciated!

Thank you so much for your love and support,
Linda

Please support me in the NYC Marathon as I run with the 2010 Team Red Cross!

Baby Robins

Erik Morehouse took this photo of a nest of baby robins. This nest is on the Morehouse home. It is so great to watch bird babies develop. I had a nest on my house a couple of years in a row. Robins are extra fun because a lot of times they have 2 broods in a row. Thanks for the photo Erik!!

HUGE Fun at the Train Party!

The WCA train ride and party last Saturday night was a gigantic success. The weather was perfect and everyone had a lot of fun!! About 100 people came out to ride the CMRR and share some food at the station. My thanks goes out to Brave Emma for always, always working to help the association in any way necessary. Dakin Morehouse for setting up, cooking, cleaning up, giving us use of the ESRM, and thinking up the idea in the first place. Doris Morehouse for help setting up, cleaning up and helping to organize everyone. Harry Jameson, Earl Pardini and the Catskill Mountain Railroad for making it possible for us to charter the train in the first place. Mo and Mickey Winograd for buying and donating the chips, coffee (which I forgot to make) and fruit platter and for lending us the beautiful tablecloths. Julia Rose, John Raffaele & Maya for making and donating the green salad. Ann Healy for making and donating the lasagna. Elie Nielson for buying and donating the cookies. The train crew Kathy, Neil, Davy & Bob McDonald. (Thanks to Bob for bringing his grill too.) Tammy & Richard Feuer, Joyce Botchford and granddaughter and all the others who helped clean up. And last but not least, Tommy Healy for being food organizer extraordinaire!!! You are AMAZING! I could not have done it without your help!!! So, thanks everyone for making the event such a resounding success!!

Carol

PS - For those of you who would like to ride the train again with family and friends here is a link to the CMRR's regular schedule.

More Father's Day Poetry

Here is another Father's Day ditty.

A Father, (and Grandfather’s) Reflection on Father’s Day
Dakin Morehouse - 2010

Why anyone bothers
To celebrate Fathers
Is simply beyond comprehension.
We just enjoy mothers,
Forsaking all others,
Save the wee ones who need our attention.
But had we detected
Our day was neglected -
It would fill us with grave apprehension.
So thanks for just being,
Agreeing, and seeing,
Your existence is our own - life extension.

Happy Father's Day!!

Several Father's Day observations from PaPa Boreegard aka Mike O'Neil:

Father’s Day in Retro

What does a son yearn for, after all?
To know his father—that mysterious entity,
Daddy, Papa, Da, Pop,
The bloodline to the past.

Combing through his writing, if there was such,
Recalling his pronouncements,
Gazing at the kodaks for a hint of
Meaning behind the frown or smile.

We delve the unknowable, we sons,
(Daughters, take your own matters in hand),
And while you may think you have a clue,
Sonny Boy, you don’t.

Boreegard

FATHER’S DAY

Hey nonnie nonnie,
There’s fish in the bay,
It’s Father’s Day,
It’s Father’s Day!

And for the while,
They’ll be scraping and bowing,
Oh hidey-ho,
They’ll be kowtowing.

But comes the morrow,
When Daddy Day’s done,
There’s no more cake,
And no more fun.

Oh, no more fondle,
No more fawn,
It’s “Get out there,
And mow the lawn!”

Boreegard.

WCA Logo Contest

Greetings WCA members,

Mo Winograd, a long-time resident and member of the WCA, recently came to me with an idea. She thought it would be great to have a contest to come up with the best design for a WV logo. The WCA board of directors loved the idea so we are moving forward. Please read Mo's write-up below. The deadline for submissions is July 5th.

So get ready to channel your inner Peter Max!!

Best,
Carol Seitz

Time to Strut Your Stuff

The Woodland Community Association is sponsoring a $100 cash prize and a $25 certificate for breakfast or lunch at Sweet Sue's to the winner of our

Design a WCA Logo Contest.

Yes, we think our WCA is important enough in all our lives that we ought to be proud to Strut Our Stuff and we'd like to proceed by first having a contest to see who can come up with a logo that captures what the Valley means to all of us. The contest is open to anyone with the creative talent to present an entry. Because we are all volunteers, we have to ask anyone interested to communicate with us electronically. You can submit your entry as a pdf, Word doc, jpeg, scan or any other electronic format. We will vote on all the entries in a fashion similar to how we voted on the pet photo contest. Of course you can snail mail us a picture of your submission to PO Box 509 as well. For electronic submissions please email wvview@gmail.com

When we think of the Valley we think of our Woodland stream, the trout fisherman, the serenity, the pines, the bears and the birds so let your imagination run wild and help us Strut our Stuff by Strutting your own.

The deadline to enter is July 5th. Once we have selected our logo, we are going to have stickers printed for our cars that will be free to members in good standing and then on July 10th we will take a vote, by a show of hands, to see how many folks will be interested in tee shirts or baseball caps with our logo. So not only will you get a cash prize but you will have the thrill of seeing your design sported on cars and (possibly) people around the valley!

Please remember when you are designing your entry that you pay per color to print an image. "We" will have to pay for any extra colors. So you might want to keep the design to one or two colors.

Paul O'Neil is 101

WCA member and frequent Woodland Valley View contributor Mike O'Neil sent this to me a few days ago.

June 9, 2010

As I did a few years ago, I’d like to share the EDITORS’ NOTE from LIFE’s August 28, 1970 issue because it extols my father and his writing, and is a fitting way to celebrate his birthday, June 9. Depending on how you look at these things, he is—or would have been—101 years old.
Happy Birthday, Pop.

MO'N

EDITORS’ NOTE
He knows an Iron Fraudator When he sees one

This week’s article about Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel, the man in charge of so much of our environment, is the work of Paul O’Neil, who has an abiding interest in the environment himself. Paul’s interest is specific: he is a fisherman. In a memorable story that he wrote for us six years ago, Paul made his position unequivocally clear: “I am against roads, I am against detergents, I am against insecticides, I am against logging. I am against flood control. I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering trout, but I pity them for playing it when they could be putting a fly on the water.”

Paul found that he had something in common with nonangler Hickel. The Secretary had first gone to Alaska as a steerage passenger on the steamship Yukon, a vessel on which O’Neil once worked as a steerage steward during a college summer. “My job was carrying garbage cans of stew and boiled potatoes down impossible companionways,” he says. “When I asked Hickel how he had liked the steerage food, he admitted he used to sneak upstairs to eat in first class. I am happy to report that I also dined in first class, along with the rest of the crew, including one man who ate raw bacon all the time.”

During trout season, when he is not writing, Paul can generally be found on Esopus Creek, a Catskill stream which he knows with astonishing intimacy down to the last rock, pool and riffle. He is apt to greet a fellow angler with a hearty “Ah, Piscator!” He slinks along the stream like a cat so as not to scare the fish. His casting is infuriatingly impeccable. His streamside entomological lore is impressive. “This dry fly,” he will exclaim, holding up a tiny bit of steel and feathers, “imitates the adult stage of the mayfly Iron Fraudator, which appears on the streams during the last week of April almost always at 1 p.m. EST.”

On the hard-fished Esopus even Paul’s skill does not always guarantee victory, and he has evolved a philosophy to cope with the vicissitudes of the stream. “Fly fishing is an exercise in masochism anyway. I knew a man who fished a remote Canadian stream where the fish were so unwary he caught beautiful trout on a hook baited with a cigar butt. But that’s no fun. If you can’t be continuously defeated, the charm of the whole thing would evaporate.” He also has a formula for victory: “Roll in corn meal, sizzle for four or five minutes in bacon fat (better, for reasons I do not understand, than butter) and serve with a fresh green vegetable, a baked potato, or macaroni with a bland cheese sauce.”

Phoenicia Festival of the Voice

Besides the WCA events this summer, those of you who are looking for fun should know about a super exciting event that will be coming to our town. It is the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice. The dates for that are August 13, 14 and 15. The full schedule is still being set. There will be performances of many kinds of music around town.

For all of you opera lovers, there will be an appearance by world famous soprano Elizabeth Futral and a full performance of Verdi's Flalstaf with singers coming from the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. There will be musical theatre in the STS playhouse with Woodland Valley's own Cardi O'Conner directing a production of 'Closer Than Ever'. Rozz Morehead will be performing gospel music at the Methodist church. Joseph Firecrow will be doing native American music. A descendant of Johann Sebastian Bach, Micheal Bach will be writing a new choral piece for performance in the St Francis de Salles church in Phoenicia. Pianist Justin Kalb will be giving a recital and, for the kids, Uncle Rock will perform in the Empire State Railway Museum. So, as you can see, there is a is something for everyone.

If you would like more information about this event you can view the video at YouTube Phoenicia Festival of the Voice Trailer or go to their website at www.PhoeniciaVoiceFest.com. If you are on Facebook you can also like The Phoenicia Festival of the Voice for current updates.

The festival is also working on raising all the money it will take to stage this incredible event so any donation you can make would be greatly appreciated. The Festival is being funded by contributions, and all of the performers and directors are volunteering their services. They are gratefully accepting tax-deductible donations mailed to The Phoenicia Festival of the Voice, PO Box 327, Phoenicia, NY 12464. Further details about the supporting the Festival are on the website or you can email l.dunne@phoeniciavoicefest.com.

They also need volunteers. The festival can not take place without the support of a dedicated team of volunteers. They are looking for volunteers both in the lead up to the festival to help with fundraising, marketing, and publicity, as well as a large team during the festival weekend to assist with all manner of logistics, including sound, lighting and staging crew, ushering, ticket sales, parking and security.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Cindy Jewett c.jewett@phoeniciavoicefest.com.

So big things are planned for our little town this summer. I would encourage you to support this amazing endeavour in any way you can!!!

For WCA Members - Summer Fun Schedule

For all you members of the Woodland Community Association here is a list of upcoming events.

SUMMER FUN SCHEDULE - I have planned a variety of fun activities for the WCA this summer. Here is a brief list in chronological order.

Saturday, June 19th - 4:00pm – CMRR Train Charter & Party
The WCA has chartered the Catskill Mountain Railroad for a community train ride. We will gather at 4:00pm at the ESRM station on Lower High St in Phoenicia, board the train and then return and have a party at the station. There will be food at the party. The event is free to all WCA members and their families with an RSVP to me at wvview@gmail.com. Please let me know exactly how many people will be attending. You may bring guests but guests will be charged $10.00 per adult - $5.00 per child. All single members of the WCA are allowed one free guest. Please be sure to RSVP. I need an accurate count for both the railroad and the food. Those of you who do not RSVP beforehand will be charged $10.00 per person at the station (I am not kidding about this folks).

Saturday, July 10th - 4:00 pm - Roxmor Clubhouse - Annual WCA Summer Meeting
This is usually our only official meeting of the year so please try and attend! Snacks will be served.

Sunday, July 25th 3:00 pm - Community Potluck with Menla Center Staff
Menla Mountain Retreat and Conference Center has again graciously agreed to co-host (with the WCA) a potluck dinner gathering on their property. It will be another great opportunity for us to strengthen our friendships with the folks at the center. Bring a dish to share. We are supplying the dinner, the Menla folks will be supplying the dessert. PLEASE RSVP to me by July 18th at wvview@gmail.com if you plan to attend so we can get an idea of how many will be joining us. Please let me know what you plan to bring when you RSVP so we can organize the food. I am looking forward to seeing you all there!

Saturday, August 7th Time & Place TBA – Dan Davis – Geology Talk
Back by popular demand, Dan Davis, Geologist for the NYCDEP will give another talk on the geology of Woodland Valley. The exact place and time is still being determined but I will let you all know asap.

Saturday, August 21st - 1:00pm - Annual Dershowitz Party
The Dershowitz family graciously hosts this fun-filled party every year and invites all of the WCA. Bring your bathing suit, a tennis racket (if you play) and a non-meat dish or drink to share. It is always a great time!!!

So that is the WCA 2010 summer schedule so far. I am working on one more exciting event but details are still not firm. I will be sending out an email with the details as soon as everything is set.

I hope to see you at one of our community events this summer!

Phoenicia Library Fair - June 12

This message just in from Judith Singer at the Phoenicia Library.

The annual Phoenicia Library Fair is almost upon us, set for Saturday, June 12 from 10 to 2. The fair keeps expanding, with more offerings of plants, baked goods, a silent auction and books, and is now held not only in front of the library at 48 Main Street in downtown Phoenicia, but also behind the library and across the street at the park alongside the creek.

Come early to fortify yourselves with lemonade and fresh-baked pies, cakes, cookies and brownies, sold in front of the library. Wander across the street to check out the plant sale, with a great selection of plants donated by both amateur and professional gardeners, including annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, and even small trees.

Don't go away - Uncle Rock, a big fan of the library, will be providing a free concert from 11 am to noon.

The silent auction, also in front of the library, will include gift certificates and items from some of the finest stores and restaurants in Shandaken, plus signed books by local authors and other interesting items.

There will be more books than ever for sale behind the library: hundreds of books for kids and young adults, over a hundred books on art, and thousands more in over three dozen categories, with everything from books on Zen to World War II to poetry (and the usual fiction and mysteries). Most books are priced at 50 cents or $1, kids' books are only 25 cents, and rare, signed and out-of-print books are priced anywhere from $2.50 to $25.00 or more.

It’s a great opportunity to pick up some bargains and at the same time help the library that helps YOU so much, with books and DVDs to borrow, audiobooks to download, free wireless access, activities for kids, and access to computer databases that let you, for example, keep up with world news, take practice SATs and Civil Service tests, and get help with homework.

The library welcomes donations of books, baked goods, and plants for the fair. Home-baked goods (labeled with contents if possible) should be delivered on the morning of the sale. Plants (labeled so we know what they are) can be delivered to the library the morning of the sale or beforehand to Marvella Tannenbaum, 688-5407 (who can also arrange for someone to pick up your plants or provide help with digging or potting). Donations of books are welcome any time that the library is open. (Please, no encyclopedias, Reader's Digest books, or old textbooks.) Thanks - and see you at the fair!

Another Grand Day of Fish Stocking

The annual Memorial Day fish stocking of the Woodland Valley stream was another grand success!! As usual, Mike O'Neil did a fabulous job organizing and rallying the troops. Sodas and water were provided enroute and there was a lovely party for the volunteers afterward at the Botchford house. It was a glorious day and close to 400 brown trout have found their new home in the Woodland Valley creek. So fisherman get out your rods and reels and have fun trying to coax one of those little beauties on to your line!
