Music at the ESRM

Here is another opportunity to hear some great music this weekend. WCA member Dakin Morehouse asked me to pass this information on to all of you. The ongoing music series in the Empire State Railway Museum has been terrific. I have caught several of the shows and the performances just keep getting better and better. This series is truly one worth checking out. Read below for the details of this Saturday's gig.

Flying Cat Music goes WAY traditional for the Yuletide holidays this year when they present Bells and Motley performing “Christmas Long Ago and Far Away” on Saturday, December 17, at the Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia. The show begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. with the door opening at 7:00. Admission is $12 at the door or $10 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling 845-688-9453.

Bells and Motley consists of Sondra and John Bromka, and they take Roots music to the extreme. Not only do they perform music dating back to Medieval period, not only do they then play that music on authentic traditional instruments, but they even build authentic period instruments themselves! The Bromkas have been at it for over twenty-five years. You might even call it their passion. Well, actually that’s not quite complete enough. They describe it this way. “Our passion in all endeavors is to combine early music with beguiling aspects of history, literature, fine arts, and personal artistry.”

Bells and Motley’s expertise extends far beyond Yuletide music. They reconstructed instruments for the four-hundredth anniversary of opera, for example; and they offer numerous and diverse musical programs. Still, this special evening spent celebrating “Christmas Long Ago and Far Away” will be broad in scope, covering Medieval, Renaissance, and traditional European Yuletide music. That music will be played on the hurdy gurdy, French and Northumbrian bagpipes, Celtic harp, Swedish nykleharpa, Irish penny whistle, and more.

An opportunity like this does not come around often. Long live Roots music and Happy Holidays to all!
