At The Fireman's Parade Last Saturday

The Fireman's Parade last Saturday afternoon was great fun. It was much longer than the normal Phoenicia parade. Since it was raining (sometimes quite hard) on Saturday morning I was nervous that the marchers would get drowned as they came through town. Mercifully, the rain stopped just before the parade begun and started again just a short while after they finished. I had a great time seeing all the different companies, listening to the marching bands and taking photos. Here are some I thought you might enjoy.

PS - The beginning photos are of the Parrots for Peace and their owner Gloria Waslyn visiting with other town residents. Those birds are gorgeous and lots of fun!

Camp Woodland Reunion Great Fun!!

Another thing that I am late with here on the blog (good thing this isn't a newspaper or I would be fired) is a message from WCA member Bill Horne regarding the Camp Woodland reunion a couple of weeks ago. The Phoenicia part of the reunion took place n Parish Hall which is where 3 of the 4 videos below were shot. Here is what Bill had to say.

"The Camp Woodland reunion in Albany and Phoenicia was a great success. Pete Seeger, his wife Toshi and daughter Tinya made an unscheduled appearance.  For any who are interested here are some videos:"

WV Kids Play Day A HUGE Success!!

I have been a bit behind in my posts these days but I wanted to let you all know that the Woodland Valley Kids Play Day on July 14th hosted by the Ffrench family was a great success!! Many, many people (both kids and grownups) showed up to play and make new friends. Rebecca Ffrench and her daughters Anna and Camilla all worked really hard to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves. I want to thank Rebecca for coming up with this idea and making it happen!! She is amazing!! I am also astonished that after she finished hosting the folks in the community association at her house she ran down to town and ran the refreshment concession at the library music event. Unbelievable!! The woman is a superhero to me! Thanks for all you do Rebecca!!

Beware Of The Bears

Just so you all know, recently there have been several instances of bears breaking into houses in Woodland Valley. The upper elevations are very dry these days so the animals have been venturing down closer to civilization. Please make sure to take precautions. Here is a link to the DEC website with information on preventing problems with bears. Please be careful!

Naming The Library for Marilyn Dershowitz

Nat Dershowitz recently emailed me to say that he was raising funds to name the library in honor of his late wife, Marilyn. For those of you who are new to the community, Marilyn was tragically killed last July in a biking accident in NYC. Here are 2 letters to Nat from Liz Potter the interim library director regarding the fund they have set up for this purpose. Read on for instructions if you would like to donate to this fund.

Dear Nat,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Phoenicia Library, we are delighted to name the library in Marilyn’s memory. I know that her love and appreciation of the library over these past 40 years was something you both shared, and we are honored by your offer to support the renovations and expansion..........
People wishing to support the Phoenicia Library in honor of Marilyn’s memory, should  send their donations to Phoenicia Library, P.O. Box 555, Phoenicia NY 12464 with a note indicating the Marilyn Dershowitz Memorial Fund.  They can also donate on-line via our PayPal account, accessible at http://phoenicia.lib.ny.us
Since our library is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, and donors, of course, receive an acknowledgment for their gift with this information. We can also accept gifts of appreciated stock.  Any questions people might have can be directed to me, Liz Potter, the library director, at 845-688-7811, or the president of our board, Kurt Boyer at the same number.
We are so grateful for your help for our library at this time, and look forward to rebuilding a library full of good books and community worthy of Marilyn’s memory.
Liz
Second Letter with detailed instructions:

Hello Nat:
A savings account was set up this morning.  There are two ways money can be put in there:

1- a check can be made out Pay to the Order of "The Phoenicia Library Assoc. Marilyn Dershowitz Fund."  The entire name of the account should appear.

2-  money can be wired directly to
Phoenicia Library Association Marilyn Dershowitz Fund
Ulster Savings Bank
Routing Number  # 221971264
Account Number #  587012800
(If we receive checks written to Phoenicia Library, with the memo line it is in memory of Marilyn, that is fine, too, we can move the money over to the fund.)

The library mailing address is:

Phoenicia Library
P.O. Box 555
Phoenicia NY 12464-0555

People are always welcome to call me if they have any questions.

Thank you so much.  We really appreciate all you are doing.

Liz

Camp Woodland Reunion

I got the message below from Sue Rosenberg regarding the upcoming Camp Woodland  reunion this weekend. She asked me to pass it along to all of you. Since the camp was in Woodland Valley I thought some of you might be interested in going to this and exploring local history.
- Carol

Hi, I am a former camper at Camp Woodland (oh so many years ago). WCA member Bill Horne suggested that I send you a note about this weekend's Camp Woodland reunion. On Sunday we are having the second half of the reunion at the Parish Hall in Phoenicia. This is going to be a Folk Festival with lots of music and stories and poems about camp and the Catskills. Its open to the public and I think its going to be great fun.
I have attached a press release about it if you want to share it with anyone up at Woodland Clove.
Sorry for the late notice.
Hope you can make it,
- Sue

Folk Festival and the Spirit of Camp Woodland
On July 15th from 1-5 pm, in the old Parish Hall on Main St in Phoenicia, there will be a celebration of  the music, stories and spirit of Camp Woodland. Camp Woodland was a progressive summer camp in Phoenicia which brought together a diverse group of children, counselors musicians  and folklorists from NYC and across the county. It was known for collecting folk songs and lore of the Catskills and promoting and preserving the regional heritage.  Each summer the camp director Norman Studer, took campers and counselors on trips throughout the Catskill Mountains to learn about and collect  the traditions, music and folk lore of the mountains, bringing both the music and new made friends back to camp.
At the end of each summer Woodland put on a Folk Festival of the Catskills . Local musicians and their music mingled with Cantatas, dances and plays written at camp and music brought to camp from around the world as well.
On Sunday, as part of a weekend long Camp Woodland reunion, and in the spirit of those Festivals,  A Folk Festival of the Catskills will be held in Phoenicia.
Performers will include former campers and counselors including Eric Weissberg, Karl Finger, Mickey Vandow, Pat Lamanna, Robert and Louise DeCormier, Niela Miller, Dan Mack. In addition there will be Bob Lusk of the Heritage Music and Laurie and Ira MacIntosh-local story tellers.   Members of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild will present a cantata written by Camp Woodland music counselor and noted composer and folklorist Herbert Haufrecht.  Titled "We've Come From the City," the cantata deals with the conflict that arose when parts of the Catskills were flooded to make reservoirs to supply drinking water to New York City.  Lydia Adams Davis, Frank Tetler, Steve Allen, and others will play the parts that the children of Camp Woodland played when it was originally performed, and Linda Bresnahan-McCarthy is the music director.
Open to the Public -$10 donations suggested.

Another Lost Cat

I got this message today from Wendy Grossman.

"One of my cats, has gone missing since friday. She is a slim tabby. three white paws and her name is Jawanna. She is not the best hunter so I fear for her...
She will come to a call or a whistle. To catch her if she is in your yard, play dumb let her come to you then pick her up. If you see her call 688-9823. I think she is either on Pantherkill or somewhere in Woodland Valley. If nothing else, send a prayer that I find her. "
