Murmurs and Incantations tells the story of Ben Levitts, a one-time impassioned activist and rising art star in 1980s New York, now a creatively blocked, middle-aged art professor. We meet Ben when, much to his surprise, he has been invited to show at a contemporary art center in Poland. While reticent to visit his ancestral homeland, Ben accepts what could be the last big opportunity of his career.

Despite his best efforts, Ben is distracted by history. A series of visions and ghostly visitations stir up a painful past. Things are further complicated by the prospects of romance. Still, the journey fuels in Ben a last-ditch effort to test his creative powers, and to find an ancestral and a personal voice.

Harrowing, poignant and irreverently funny, Murmurs and Incantations explores the inspiration, the anguish and the responsibility of being an artist. It sharply examines the ways in which identity, cultural history and personal baggage affect, impede and shape the creative process. Theatrically, Murmurs and Incantations is groundbreaking in its meaningful incorporation of performance art into both the form and content of the play.

Play Fair 2013 Begins This Weekend

Talented actress and WCA member Noni Connor will be doing a piece at the Shandaken Theatrical Society's Play Fair 2013 starting this weekend. I am definitely playing to attend. Here is what Noni had to say about her upcoming performances.

I'll be doing a short play by my amazing friend-since-grade-school playwright Paul Graham, acting opposite Woodstock Fringe Festival buddy Wallace Norman, at the most charming theater in the world, which happens to be in our little (upstate) town, Phoenicia! How wonderful is that!

It will be a rare and special treat when Flying Cat Music presents Los Angeles based songwriter and Emmy award winning composer Ernest Troost at the Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia. His highly acclaimed screenplay scoring talent tends to keep Troost anchored close to Hollywood, leaving little opportunity for extensive touring. Shandaken Day 2013

This year Shandaken Day will be on Saturday August 24th - 10am to 6pm. It will be held on the future site of the Catskill Interpretive Center (affectionately referred to in the community as "the road to nowhere"). There will be games, food, awards, music and various other happenings all throughout the day. It should be a really fun day for all.

Tavern 214 Opens This Weekend

For all of you who are looking for a new hangout in Phoenicia, Tavern 214 (the old Claude's Bistro) on Rt 214 is set to open this weekend. I don't think that they have a website yet but I put a link to their Facebook page below. Can't wait to try this new Gastropub (I learn a new word everyday). Good luck to the new owners!!!

Davy's Back!

To celebrate the return of the Davy Crockett statue to Main St Phoenicia, many of the businesses in town have banded together and proclaimed August 17th as DAVY CROCKETT DAY! The festivities will take place on that day from 12 noon - 1pm with prizes, a look-alike contest, a ukelele show and lots of other fun for all.

The iconic statue was removed from Main St. a few months back while The Alamo Sport's Cantina did some renovation work. Davy was recently reinstalled but in a slightly different place. It now resides in front of the Mystery Spot.

Even the town board (or most of them) got into the fun by passing a resolution to honor the outdoorsman. See Watershed Post article below.

Moths In The Valley

Paul Misko sent me a message with photos of two cool looking moths. I am in constant amazement at how many gorgeous and interesting creatures surround us.

Here are Paul's message and photos.

Saw these two moths on the side of a cabin. A green" luna" moth, and a "pink and white" moth. The green one's wing span was almost 4", and the pink and white one was about 1 inch long, and looked like it was headed to a party in 1970. Note the fuzzy yellow head, or is it a hat?

Woodland Valley History Night

Paul Misko sent me this report on the Woodland Valley History night that was held at the Botchford home on July 26th. Here is what Paul had to say.

   A good size group gathered for the Woodland Valley History talk, which was generously hosted by Hawley Botchford. History from the Ice Age to the more recent past was discussed, with a focus on the tanning industry which had such a great and lasting impact in the valley. Good food, history, and a few laughs made for a great evening. Another history event is on the way. Robotics Workshop At The Phoenicia Library

If you are between the ages of 9 and 16 and are looking for something really awesome to do next week, WCA members Marc Howard and Miriam Melnick are giving a kid's robotics workshop at the Phoenicia Library. How cool is that!!! I wish I were a kid!! it is Wednesday, August 7th through Friday, August 9th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm each day. The workshop is only for kids 9-16 (rats!). It is free but you must sign up. Space is limited so do it ASAP. Attendance all three days is required. For more information go to the Phoenicia Library website or call the library at 845-688-7811.
