Festival Of The Voice Starts Tonight!

You have had to be living under a rock not to know that this weekend is the 5th annual Festival of the Voice. It kicks off tonight with flamenco! I am very excited about this year's performances and plan to attend everything I can.

Guitar Mash

In two weeks The Great Woodstock Mash (Guitars and Vocals - where attendees jam with beloved musicians - in the intimacy of a gorgeous Woodstock home) will be here. The evening's proceeds will benefit Onteora Schools' Music Department, keeping in the tradition of Levon Helm who so generously supported this department. I'm helping spread the word - and whether you can attend or not - I hope that you might also pass this on to folks who love music, play and jam themselves and/or love Onteora Music Department.

It is a rare opportunity to be with well-known guitarists, including Larry Campbell, in a private home - for an intimate, fun evening of guitar playing and singing. The ticket price is $80 and includes a delicious meal prepared by "Cue" BBQ and summer cocktails.

Boreegard's Tuna Potato Salad

Here is a recipe just in from Woodland Valley's own Mike O'Neil aka Boreegard. Enjoy!


Frankly, I can’t remember when our family has not had this recipe to fall back on, when summer’s heat starts to get to us.  Surely since we routed the King’s regulars at Bunker Hill.

Boreegard


Tuna Potato Salad

2 pounds potatoes
1 small onion, chopped
1 ½  cup chopped celery
½ cup radishes, sliced
2 cans 6 to 7 ounces tuna in oil
1 tsp flavor enhancer
2 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
1 cup mayonnaise
2 Tbl prepared mustard
2 Tbl vinegar
2 Tbl chopped parsley

Cook potatoes until tender.  Drain.  Add onion, celery, radishes and tuna.  Sprinkle with flavor enhancer, salt and pepper.  Toss lightly.  Combine mayonnaise, mustard and vinegar.  Add to mix and toss lightly.  Chill.  Turn into a serving bowl and sprinkle with chopped parsley.

Local Surveyor Rick Brooks of Brooks and Brooks Land Surveyors will give his highly sought after power point presentation detailing the largest cable-logging railroad to operate in the Catskill
Mountains. The Fenwick Lumber Company shipped millions of board feet of finished lumber between the years of 1903 to 1917 from its town of Hunter mill over the Ulster and Delaware Railroad to East coast markets that included the Ashokan reservoir. This is a free public event co-sponsored by the U&D Historic Society and the ESRM.

Senator Seward Hosts Mobile Office Hours

State Senator James Seward will be holding mobile office hours at the Shandaken Town Hall next Tuesday July 29th from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to ask the senator questions or obtain assistance from him or his staff. No appointment is necessary. Another Fun Dersh Party

Everyone who came to the Dershowitz party this year had a great time! With the glorious pool and the stunning view it is always a great place to relax and have fun. And Nat is a wonderful host! Family Fun And Fish Day

The Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program in partnership with the NYSDEC fisheries staff will be having a Family Fun and Fish Day at Kenneth Wilson State Park, 859 Wittenberg Road, Mt Tremper, NY - Sunday, July 27th from 11am - 1:30pm. Join the fun and learn to fish!

Volunteers from Trout Unlimited will be on hand to demonstrate everything form baiting a hook to casting a line. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. No fishing license is required. Learn about aquatic ecology and how to identify fish.

All fishing supplies will be loaned by the DEC. You can bring your own equipment if you prefer. Other family activities include a barbecue and youth crafts under the pavilion.

Those Darn Bears

WCA member and Treasurer Jeff Schwartz sent me this photo a couple of days ago. Apparently, this little guy was visiting his house after the community association meeting. Do be alert and aware because the bears are out and about in full force here in Woodland Valley. Even if you don't see them, the evidence is everywhere. Garbage cans are routinely knocked over and rummaged through. So be careful with both your trash and yourselves.

Annual Meeting Of Library Association

The Phoenicia Library Association has invited everyone in the general public to their annual meeting. It will take place on Thursday, July 17th at 6:30 at the Temporary Library at 9 Ava Maria Drive in Phoenicia.

They will be reviewing the past year's activities and answering all questions. It will be a great time to meet the board of directors and learn how the library functions.

SAVE Tag Sale

SAVE, the Shandaken Volunteer Effort, is having there annual tag sale. This year it is on Saturday July 26th from 10am to 4pm at the Migliorelli's Farm Stand 5150 Rt 28 in Mt. Tremper. All monies collected go directly to the care and vetting of the shelter's dogs. To donate items for the tag sale contact Nancy Hudler at 845-688-7284. Raindate is July 27th (same time, same place). So drop by and see what treasures you can find. You can get some great things for your home and help the dogs at the same time. There is plenty of parking at the farm stand. All dogs must be leashed.

Meet Sam Fahey

There is a wonderful new Woodland Valley resident I thought you all should see. After losing their long time companion Shadow last winter, Jay and Susan Fahey have adopted a beautiful new dog. His name is Sam. They got him from a local rescue group last week. After initially thinking he may be part lab, the consensus now is that he is part beagle, part golden retriever and maybe part collie. He is sweet, handsome, playful and intelligent. They are all in love.

Chad Storey New Shandaken Police Chief

On Monday night the Shandaken Town Board appointed Chad Storey as the new town Police Chief. The post was recently vacated by long time veteran Jimmy McGrath. Chief Storey is a home town boy who, until this appointment, was a sergeant in the Ulster County Sheriff's department. I personally think he will make an outstanding police chief and wish him the best of luck!

Electronics Recycling Ending In Shandaken

Electronic "Ewaste" Service will be ending on Sunday July 13th

Due to DEC lack of communication with Vendors, they are stopping pickup until they know what NYS will re-imburse them for. So bring your old TV's, Computers & any old Electronics into our shed at Town Hall - to right of dog shelter. BEFORE MON. JULY 14TH. If door is closed just open it.

After that you will need to take your old TV's & electronics over to Town of Hunter Transfer Station - which is the closest location to us. Located at 74 Hylan Drive. They are open Mon, Tues, Thurs & Friday 7:30 - 3:30 and Sundays 8-3:30. This is a free service. More info 518-943-4600
You may also take electronics waste to Staples or Salvation Army in Kingston.

Mount Tremper Arts In The NYTimes

Mount Tremper Arts got a great write up in the NYTimes on July 4th. The article also has a bit of a Woodland Valley connection because it contains a quote by WCA member Meg Soiffer. I thought the piece was excellent and hopefully it will bring even more attention to Mount Tremper Arts and the innovative work they are helping to nurture.

It so great to have such a wonderful contemporary art and performance space right here in our own back yards! Try and make time to catch some performances this summer. As with all art that is pushing boundaries, you may or may not like everything you see but it will inform and open your mind. And when art that is fresh and unusual works, I find it to be light years better then anything else around.
