OMG Yard Sale
June and David Brought who own a cabin here in Woodland Valley and also a home on Rt 42 are having a big yard sale this weekend at their Rt 42 home. Here is the message I got about the sale. Sounds like something that I will be checking out!!
June and David Brought are having the OMG Yard Sale at their home on Rt. 42.
Furniture, piano, kitchen and household items. Very nice stuff, not your normal yard sale. They just want to pass on what is not being used.
Time: Saturday and Sunday, 8/31 and 9/1 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.
Place: 317 Rt. 42, Shandaken.
Directions: Drive north on Rt.42 until you see the signs for "Bushnellsville". Start paying attention. When you come across a yellow sign that looks like a lightning bolt (curve in the road), slow down. Their house is the next possible left, across the bridge.
Tom Pacheco At The ESRM
WCA member Dakin Morehouse will once again play host to The Flying Cat Music Series as they welcome Tom Pacheco to the ESRM this weekend. Janet and Tommy of Flying Cat also said that your reservations are not confirmed until you receive an email back from them. So act soon if you want to go to the show.

Boreegard On Poison Ivy
The Three Leaf Lesson
A lesson for you, tenderfoot,
As spring sends out its green-ed root,
And ivy creeps both high and fine,
It looks so lovely on its vine.
Look well upon its figuration,
For three leaves earns it condemnation,
Touch it not or you will scratch,
And pustules, bumps, and hivies hatch.
The medicos will sell you potions,
Sell you creams and prescribe lotions,
But summer heat and sweat galore,
Will spread the poison more and more.
Then Mother Nature grants surcease,
As summer ends and heat waves ease,
You’re not a tenderfoot—no more,
You know it’s three leaves, and not four.

Town Of Shandaken Emergency Info
Town Clerk Joyce Grant sent out the information below and asked me to pass it along to all of you. Here is what she had to say.
The Town of Shandaken uses Facebook as a venue for quick notifications & emergency warnings as well as updates of local town events & happenings
* Clearly, the FASTEST & BEST way to distribute Important Public Safety Information
* Early Emergency Notifications, Disaster Help & Recovery Actions can easily be posted up to the minute.
*Able to Link to specific media articles, photos & video that public should see
*Responses to public questions & queries can be posted in a timely manner
Most Importantly >> Emergency Notifications to Facebook are uploaded even during power outages – if you have a working phone – you can get Town notifications from a friend or relative that lives out of the area.
Our Facebook Account is also linked to our Twitter account – to help cover more of the town
During outages, from remote areas that have electric but minimum internet access, it is much easier to post emergency updates on our Facebook account than on our website.. so we cannot stress enough how important it is for town residents to have Facebook for updates!
To find us on Facebook.. go to www.facebook.com search for Town of Shandaken

Murmurs and Incantations tells the story of Ben Levitts, a one-time impassioned activist and rising art star in 1980s New York, now a creatively blocked, middle-aged art professor. We meet Ben when, much to his surprise, he has been invited to show at a contemporary art center in Poland. While reticent to visit his ancestral homeland, Ben accepts what could be the last big opportunity of his career.
Despite his best efforts, Ben is distracted by history. A series of visions and ghostly visitations stir up a painful past. Things are further complicated by the prospects of romance. Still, the journey fuels in Ben a last-ditch effort to test his creative powers, and to find an ancestral and a personal voice.
Harrowing, poignant and irreverently funny, Murmurs and Incantations explores the inspiration, the anguish and the responsibility of being an artist. It sharply examines the ways in which identity, cultural history and personal baggage affect, impede and shape the creative process. Theatrically, Murmurs and Incantations is groundbreaking in its meaningful incorporation of performance art into both the form and content of the play.

As the summertime is reaching its peak, one contemplates either; great that we are moving into the fall, or perhaps, wistfulness that summer is leaving. Have you considered what is it that makes you happy?
As simplistic as this question is, when you consider, why you do what you do to get ahead, isn't it because it makes you happy? Or is it that you will be happy when you finally get what you want?
Can you be centered, focused and happy under stressful situations?
How to do this?
First come to our free meditation workshop next Thursday Aug 15th at
Phoenicia Healing Arts (upstairs from the Ice Cream Store)
74 Main St
Phoenicia, NY 12464
Or contact me directly.
Take care and please feel free to call or email anytime soon!

Davy's Back!
To celebrate the return of the Davy Crockett statue to Main St Phoenicia, many of the businesses in town have banded together and proclaimed August 17th as DAVY CROCKETT DAY! The festivities will take place on that day from 12 noon - 1pm with prizes, a look-alike contest, a ukelele show and lots of other fun for all.
The iconic statue was removed from Main St. a few months back while The Alamo Sport's Cantina did some renovation work. Davy was recently reinstalled but in a slightly different place. It now resides in front of the Mystery Spot.
Even the town board (or most of them) got into the fun by passing a resolution to honor the outdoorsman. See Watershed Post article below.
Shandaken's wild for Davy Crockett -- Except for a lone holdout
Anyway, it sounds like a great day. I am planning to go. See you all there!

Moths In The Valley
Paul Misko sent me a message with photos of two cool looking moths. I am in constant amazement at how many gorgeous and interesting creatures surround us.
Here are Paul's message and photos.
Here are Paul's message and photos.
Saw these two moths on the side of a cabin. A green" luna" moth, and a "pink and white" moth. The green one's wing span was almost 4", and the pink and white one was about 1 inch long, and looked like it was headed to a party in 1970. Note the fuzzy yellow head, or is it a hat?

History from the Ice Age to the more recent past was discussed, with a focus on the tanning industry which had such a great and lasting impact in the valley. Good food, history, and a few laughs made for a great evening. Another history event is on the way. A talk on the History of Lighting will be given on Saturday evening, August 17th. To register and get more details, contact Paul at woodvalleybear@gmail.com. Space is limited.
