Bo's Corn Chowder
Here is another great recipe from Boreegard (aka Mike O'Neil).
It occurred to me that, rather than ignoring the three leftover ears of corn that I had consigned to the fridge—from whence they would be ignored for a week, grow fine beards of penicillin and thence be re-consigned to the compost heap—I could use them to make a chowder.
It occurred to me that, rather than ignoring the three leftover ears of corn that I had consigned to the fridge—from whence they would be ignored for a week, grow fine beards of penicillin and thence be re-consigned to the compost heap—I could use them to make a chowder.
This I did. Here’s how you might do the same. Es muy deliciouso, and it’s a fine way to use the extra corn that will almost certainly crowd your summer larder.
Ingredients
4 strips of bacon.
1 tablespoon butter.
A medium onion—chopped.
½ a jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced.
Kernels from 3 or 4 ears of corn (approximately 2 cups).
The stripped cobs.
2 medium potatoes—peeled and chopped into ¼ slices.
2 cups chicken stock.
2 cups milk.
1 bay leaf.
Salt and pepper to taste.
½ cup heavy cream or half and half.
To Do
In a large non-stick frying pan or pot—
Fry bacon until crisp. Remove and save.
Retain two tablespoons of bacon fat in the pan and add butter.
On low heat, cook onion and jalapeno until tender.
Add potatoes, corn COBs, bay leaf, salt and pepper, stock and milk—bring to boil.
Lower heat and cover. Simmer until potatoes are tender—10 to 15 minutes.
Remove the cobs.
Add corn kernels and simmer for about 5 minutes.
With a slotted spoon, remove 1 ½ cups of solids and puree. Return to soup.
Add the bacon, which you’ve crushed to smithereens.
Add cream or half and half.
Warm—serve.
4 to 6 servings.

Memorial Service for Judy Wyman
As many of you already know, Judy Wyman died suddenly a little over 2 weeks ago. I don't usually post things about people outside Woodland Valley but Judy was a friend to many, many of us and a big presence in our town in general. She fought tirelessly for the environment and her community and always whole-heartedly supported Woodland Valley.

Wrens
I got this message a few days ago from Paul Misko. Looks like he has new tenants at his house.
"Here are two pics I took yesterday of a wren family. I built this bird box with a removable wood panel so after the birds have signed the lease, I can view the chicks as they grow. It's been busy with the constant delivery of meals. Soon it will be check out time, and they will leave nothing but some memories, nesting material, and an unpaid cable bill."

A Gorgeous Day To Ride The Rails
Last Saturday the WCA took a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad. It was a magnificent day weather wise and the event was a big success (if I do say so myself). Old neighbors got a chance to meet new neighbors and that is what our association is all about. I was also happy to see so many children come out to ride the train. They seemed to particularly enjoy themselves.
Tommy Healy once again organized the snacks for the gathering. He is a genius at pulling together a party! My thanks go out to him!! I would also like to thank everyone on the CMRR for showing us such a good time. Hopefully we can do this again at some point.

Father's Day Poetry by Boreegard
LONG LIVE THE KING
The throngs shall roar,
Hip Hip Hooray!,
Give way they’ll say,
It’s Father’s Day!
The high liege Lord,
Has one full day,
When all shall bend,
To his whim and sway.
But tempus fugit,
God’s truth be said,
Come Monday’s dawn,
His reign is dead.
The Queen assumes,
The throne once more,
To rule the next,
Three sixty-four.

Another Burglary
I have just gotten a report from another Woodland Valley resident that his house was burglarized about 2 weeks ago. For privacy reasons the resident does not want me to mention the exact address but it was off Ed West Rd. This incident took place in the same general area as the last break-in. Please be alert to any strange activity in the neighborhood. Call the local police if you see anything or if you have any information regarding the recent robberies.

Updates From Nowness
WCA Member and Editor/Producer Max Nova recently sent me some links to his latest work on NOWNESS. I went to the website and this is how they described the work they are doing.
"Each day, this award-winning online platform showcases an exclusive premiere of the most inspiring stories influencing contemporary arts and global lifestyle, previewing the latest in fashion, art, film, music, architecture and design, travel, sport, and gastronomy."
so here is Max's message and the links:
"Big news from Nowness today, where my latest collaboration with Matt Black went live today as an unprecedented same-day two-parter: Inside Rebel, an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at James Franco's all-star Rebel art show.
Inspired by the mythology surrounding Nicholas Ray's pioneering 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause, the show at LA's MOCA includes collaborations with with a stellar cast of leading contemporary artists, including Paul & Damon McCarthy, Aaron Young, Harmony Korine, Ed Ruscha, Terry Richardson and Douglas Gordon.
We've also got several more projects coming up on Nowness in June and July – stay tuned!"
Max also sent me another link to a video piece last Sunday. I am sorry I didn't get this up to coincide with the Mad Men finale but I think the piece is still great.
"As an attitudinal primer for Sunday's Mad Men season finale, I'd like to share with you the latest installment of our Reflections series for Nowness, profiling the LA art world's very own mad man, Aaron Young."
Matt sums it up best: "There is a great energy and attitude to his art. It's a pure exploration of America and masculinity– minimalism on steroids."
Check out all the videos when you have a chance. They are very informative and interesting.

Beware Of The Fox
Dennis Havel sent me the photo and message below. I will also add that there are a lot of rabbits around that area too (probably why the fox likes to hunt there). So it is definitely a good idea to slow down on that part of the road.
"Here is a shot of the fox that lives and hunts in the tall grass off WV Road near Muddybrook. I have often seen him on the road and he seems to be unconcerned with passing vehicles. Drivers should be alert in that area."

Trout Stocking
I am a bit late with this post but the (fish) tale is still worth telling. On the Monday of Memorial Day Weekend, Troutmeister and Piscatorial Grand Pooh Bah, Mike O'Neil (aka Boreegard), led a enthusiastic group of volunteers in the stocking of the Woodland Valley Stream. As usual, the group met the truck at Roxmor, went up into the valley, and then headed back down the road stopping in various places to release the wriggling cargo. Only the hardy brown trout is released because of it's resilience to the heat of the sometimes lower summer waters. The event was a great success and all of the fish are (for now) free and living in the bucolic waters of our valley waiting to elude and torment the local fishermen.
Nice job Boreegard and fellow stockers!!

I got a message from Peggy Neu a few days ago. She has written another article for the Huffington Post. Here is what she had to say about it.
