New Farm Stand In Phoenicia

I passed the Phoenicia Market the other day and wondered what was happening in front. Apparently, two local young entrepreneurs (one who lives in Woodland Valley) are opening a homegrown, local produce stand. If you would like to read more about it here is the link. This should be a great addition to our little hamlet!

Paul Misko History Talk

Last Saturday Paul Misko gave a talk on the founding of Woodland Valley in the 1850's. It was hosted by Hawley and Joyce Botchford and was a huge success. Over 20 folks attended.

Here are some pictures, taken by Joyce Botchford, black and white pic is of Col. Snyder.

Some in attendance were the Simpsons, Piels, Mac Donalds, Congdons, Rolf Reiss, and the special guest was Barbara Mac Adam from the Hood Museum at Dartmouth, who provided some great info about the Woodland Tannery painting. Hawley gave us a good dose of history on the Woodworth and Beach families, who along with Col. Snyder, founded Woodland.

Mike O'Neil On The Slug

Bo Ruminates on the Slug

The slimy, crawly slugs this year,
Their numbers are incredible,
Oh—icky, yucky horned things,
If only they were edible.

They’d marinate in garlic’d wine,
And then be set to roast,
With just a hint of rosemary,
Then placed on buttered toast.

And none would be the wiser,
No foody critics rail,
For in the presentation,
They’d look just like a snail.

Tommy Healy Goes Flying

I got this email from Tommy Healy about 10 days ago and didn't have time to post it. It is so cool that he went on this adventure. Here is what Tommy had to say about it.

"Flying over the hudson was good today. Took a ride out of the Old Rhinebeck Airodrome this morning before the Air show and the thunderstorms came in. I never flew in a 1929 biplane before and this is one of those bucket list things I wanted to do at some point.. The only thing missing was me wearing a scarf. The youtube video link below shows us flying over tthe Hudson River with the Rhinecliff bridge seen below.... Quiz time, Why did pilots wear scarf in these planes back in the day? (I knew the answer)"

Heather Pierson At The ESRM

For those of you who have not gone to the Flying Cat Music Series at the Empire State Railway Museum I highly recommend it. It is a fantastic way to listen to great music in a small intimate setting and the acoustics of the room are fabulous! So check out one of their shows when you have the chance.

On Saturday, August 8, Flying Cat Music presents the dynamic Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio in Phoenicia at the Empire State Railway Museum located at 70 Lower High Street. The doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the show beginning at 7:30 prompt. Admission is $15 or $13 with RSVP to flyingcatmusic@gmail.com or by calling 845-688-9453.

The magic in the music of Heather Pierson is impervious to genrefication. In one three month span she was lauded in the press as both a neoclassical pianist and as the leader of a jazz quartet, but look up Heather Pierson on Sonic Bids and she's found under “Solo” “Folk” and “Acoustic.” Lone Star Magazine views Pierson as a veritable double bill, saying, “Heather is like two great acts in one, sliding from sweet acoustic Appalachian old-timey vibe with Patty Griffinesque lyrics to brassy New Orleans blues piano with a bone thrown to Bessie Smith." Heather's voice is pure and sometimes even sweet, but it also carries great power. It's a voice that could mesmerize a dragon or a dove.  A review in MainlyPiano.com captures her dynamic range, noting "Pierson’s voice is strong yet vulnerable, conveying tremendous emotional depth and passion”.

2015 FoV A Great Success

This year's Festival of the Voice was another great triumph. There was so much wonderful music to choose from that it was hard to decide what to attend. But with the depth and scope of the talent it was really hard to go wrong. Every performance I attended was just wonderful!!

And there were many, many friends and neighbors in the crowd. So socializing while waiting for the shows to starts was fun too!

Congrats to everyone who makes the festival possible each year. It is really a great asset to our community! Viva La Festival of the Voice!!
