When music becomes classic, it is timeless. It feels old because it seems always to have been there and fresh because it’s not owned solely by the past. It remains vibrant in the present while temporary fads come and go. Music that is classic leaps generations and finds new homes in modern hearts. That's how it is with the music of Hannah Shira Naiman, a young woman who grew up north of Toronto, Canada. She writes songs with roots dating back hundreds of years to the mountains of Appalachia and does so astonishingly well. Hannah is not a traditional folk singer, rather she's a contemporary songwriter and performer who is heir to a magnificent tradition that she joyously upholds. Her pure gift is winning Hannah admirers of every age.

New Poetry From Boreegard

The Brook on May 23

At the evening’s last pool,
Two bats swoop in tandem and strafe the water,
As I send my line upstream, searching for trout.

The Grandparents’ Pool, where once we laved
Their old anglers ashes,
First he in his year of death,
Then she in her’s.

I think of reincarnation, and worry,
That the reincarnate might bite,
On my Dark Cahill’s barb.

One last cast, times three,
Then, up through dark childhood woods,
Stumbling home,
Troutless, breathless, content.

Shandaken Metal Pick-Up Day June 15th

This year metal pick-up day will be Monday, June 15th. Your metal must be out by Sunday night, June 14th. The trucks will only ride down each road once and if your metal is not out they will not return to get it. The objects put out for pick-up must be METAL ONLY!!

As always, there is a metal bin in the Shandaken town recycling area behind town hall that is available all year round. So if you miss this pick-up you can always drop off your metal there during regular recycling times.

Even The Brits Like Phoenicia

The Daily Mail just published the latest installment in the "I Love Phoenicia" series of magazine articles that seems to be appearing lately. It prominently features The Graham & Co (those people seem to have an awesome PR agency) and the Phoenicia Diner. If you would like to read this one (although it is basically like the others) the link is below.

Elle Magazine Loves Phoenicia

There was an article posted last week on the Elle magazine site (see link below) describing Phoenicia and all the fun things to do and see here. Elle is the latest media outlet to join the list of those singing the praises of our little town. I don't see how we are going to move this summer without running smack dab into a hipster. Oh well, it is great for the local businesses who work hard and make this town a better place. So, in the end I say bring on the metrojacks (young men in long beards and flannel shirts that only occasionally leave Brooklyn) and the zip car driving tourists. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Tommy Healy Dives in Bonaire

Here is a recent email and some great diving vacation photos from Tommy Healy. Looks like his recent trip to Bonaire was great fun! Here is what Tommy had to say.

Back from the photo course with Jack and Sue Drafahl and a week of diving in Bonaire. Good friends, good food and great diving. Each one in the class had to submit 12 photos they took during the week. Below are my top 12 for the week. Weather was great, no rain just a lot of wind. Nothing that ruined the diving.

Talk with you all soon   Tom

Campfires, Recreational Fires and Outdoor Cooking OK

The NYSDEC has lifted the ban on recreational fires, campfires and outdoor cooking but the brush burning ban is still in effect through May 21st. Here is the announcement.

NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

Effective Immediately: New York State has lifted the ban on campfires, recreational fires and outdoor cooking due to a downgrade of the state fire danger rating. The fire danger rating dropped from “high” to “moderate” due to milder temperatures and rain forecasted for many areas across the state in the coming days. Campfires and small outdoor fires are allowed, but DEC is urging people to be cautious so that everybody can stay protected. The ban on brush burning remains in effect through May 21.http://on.ny.gov/1Kb1hwM

Burning Ban Also Expanded

I just found out today that the Governor and the NYSDEC not only extended the burning ban but expanded it to include ALL outdoor fires of any kind. That includes campfires, fire pits and cooking on your gas grill (they are taking no chances of flying sparks) etc. Open burning of debris is the largest single cause of spring wildfires in the state. So please observe this ban in these super dry conditions.

Burning Ban Extended

By order of the NYSDEC & Governor Cuomo's office, the open burning ban is extended through May 21st due to ongoing dry conditions here in the Catskills.  Unless the ban is extended again you will be able to get your burning permit at Town Clerk's office on Friday May 22nd.

5th Annual Mama's Boy Bake-Off

Don't forget that the 5th annual Mama's Boy's bake-off is today at 1pm. It is a great tradition. All the baked goods are auctioned off for the benefit of the Phoenicia Library. Sounds like a win-win for everybody!

Please Observe The Burning Ban

There is a burning ban in effect until May 14th. Please make sure you observe this ban! I can't stress that enough. There have been a couple of large brush fires in the areas recently. So make sure that besides not burning anything around the house there should be absolutely NO camp fires while hiking right now.

The large brush fire in the Shawangunks is 90% under control as of this morning. But there is another fire closer to home in Chichester around Rt 214. It started yesterday and it is still burning. But at this point it is headed up toward Hunter. Many different local fire companies have been called in to work on putting this out.

So please keep everyone safe and refrain from burning anything outside until the local burning ban is lifted later in the month.

Health, Happiness & Energy

WCA member MJ Reiss is teaching a Health, Happiness and Energy workshop. Here is what MJ had to say.

Hi Folks,
How can we bring peace of mind for ourselves each day?

Growing up, we learn how to pass our classes, but so often we are not taught how to manage our own minds... The power is is our use of the breath.Check our the dates and times below our Happiness Hour; an introduction to a simple deep meditation, knowledge and some breathing techniques; Sunday, Monday and Wednesday.
The time is getting closer.... check out the dates. the link to the course. Our 5 day Happiness Program starts May 14th.
As always, if you would not like to be receiving these updates, just send me a shout and I will refrain from letting you know more:)
Take care,
MJ

Health, Happiness & Energy
Only a breath away!

The degree to which stress unduly influences our lives is generally underestimated: Often the mind clings on to anger, guilt, or regret about the past, or is plagued by anxiety and worry about the future. This oscillation of the mind causes tension and stress both for ourselves and for the people around us and leads to reduced effectiveness in action. Breath is the link between body and mind, and thus is the key to handling our mind and negative emotions, and releasing our true potential - at work, at home, and at leisure.
