Phoenicia Yard Sale
There will be a big yard sale this weekend in Phoenicia on the green in front of Mama's Boy. It is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Last years sale was great. This years sale should be good too. See you all there.

Disaster Readiness

St. Francis de Sales Parish will host a Community-wide meeting on Tuesday, August 26, from 10 - 11:30 am in the Parish Hall - Main Street Phoenicia.
Ulster County's Disaster Response Volunteer Workforce Committee meets monthly to bring together local government, religious and civic groups, and non-profit agencies to assess our county's current capacity and needs in the event of a major disaster like Hurricane Irene. The August meeting will bring together representatives from the Red Cross, United Way, UlsterCorps, RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), and the local Phoenicia Rotary. Please pass the word along to anyone who is interested in sharing ideas and strategies for response and recovery for our area.

The culture of the Playwrights Unit is one of community, nourishment, honor, mutual respect, and professionalism.
Eleven Playwrights Unit playwrights will be represented in the two programs of new short plays. A splendid company of actors, most local to the Hudson Valley, have come together to read this eclectic and exciting collection of new plays. The plays are funny, sad, outrageous, moving , witty and literate.

Woodstock Fringe was founded in 2003 by Wallace Norman. Woodstock Fringe was in residence at the Byrdcliffe Theatre for a decade where Wallace Norman produced theWoodstock Fringe Festival of Theatre & Song.

Shandaken Day 2014
Shandaken Day is this Saturday, August 23rd from 10am to 6pm in Big Indian Park. There will be live music, games, food and activities all throughout the day. At 10am (ish) there will also be the unveiling of a new tourism information kiosk in the park. It will have a lot of great information about the area. This is the first of four kiosks to be erected in the hamlets of our town so even if you miss the unveiling you should check it out. Have a great Shandaken Day!!

Boreegard's Vichyssoise
WCA member Mike O'Neil aka Boreegard sent me this recently. I thought I would pass it on so you all can enjoy it!
A HERETICAL VICHYSSOISE
This chilled, smooth, potato and leek soup is a delicious way to counter the summer heat. It was my father's favorite, and is fairly easy to make. It adds a touch of class to the table. It was originated in America (not France), by Louis Diat , chef at the Ritz Hotel in New York, either in 1910 or 1917. If you want to appear in the know (and in fact to be in the know), this admonition by Craig Claiborne in his THE NEW YORK TIMES COOK BOOK will be your ticket:
Someone should start a campaign to instruct Americans that vichyssoise is not pronounced veeshy-swah! Because this creation of the late Louis Diat has become a national favorite, it seems only just that the final consonant be sounded. It is veeshee-swaze.
In my version below, you will see that I have committed heresy. I have substituted that wonderfully sweet onion from Vidalia, Georgia (the Vidalia) for the traditional leek. Louis Diat had no access to this fairly new allium, but if he had, perhaps he would have tried it too. Necessity being the mother of invention, when I most recently made vichyssoise there were no leeks to be had—thus the substitution. Vidalia is a noble replacement indeed, and is much easier to deal with in preparation (no worries about washing grit from between its leaves).
INGREDIENTS
o two large or three medium Vidalia onions, chopped.
o one small red onion, chopped.
o four tablespoons butter.
o five medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly.
o one quart chicken stock.
o one teaspoon salt.
o three cups milk.
o one cup half and half.
o one cup heavy cream.
WHAT TO DO
o In a large pot, add onions, butter, potatoes, chicken stock, salt. Bring to boil and then simmer until tender (about 25 to 30 minutes).
o Puree in a blender or food processor.
o Return mixture to pot, add the milk and briefly bring to boil.
Cool and add the half and half and cream.
o Chill thoroughly in refrigerator (James Beard has you do this for 24 hours, but you can cheat by putting it in your freezer for an hour or two, and then transferring it to the fridge).
o Serve with a garnish of chopped chives.

Twilight Limited Tonight

The Feuer's African Safari
WCA members (and all around active and fun people) Richard & Tammy Feuer just got back from an amazing trip to Africa. They sent me some great photos with the message below. Here is what Ricard had to say.
The last 2 pics are from a neighborhood pot luck dinner last night that the Barleys organized. Since only one family pictured, the Widenskys, made it to the Dershowitz picnic we thought it would be nice to get together. Three families are lifelong residents and three are newcomers. Three are in the WCA and three are not. I think it greatly illustrates why we love Woodland Valley so much.

Corn Pudding From Aileen Schwartz
Last week, after the Dershowitz party, Aileen Schwartz sent me this message. Apparently, she brought her corn pudding to the gathering and 5 different people asked her for the recipe. So she thought she would pass it on to all. Here is what Aileen had to say about the dish.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Below is the recipe for Corn Pudding. I doubled the recipe for the party. Enjoy!

Corn Pudding
1 stick softened margarine
2 eggs beaten
1 can creamed corn
1 can corn niblets
8 oz sour cream
1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
Heat oven at 350 degrees. Mix together well, margarine, eggs, cans of corn and sour cream. Add Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix and stir all together. Pour into baking dish. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Serves 8. Enjoy.

Darn Computer
Sooooooooo sorry folks for my recent absence from the blog. I think this has been the longest stretch of days without a post since I started keeping the site in 2007. For those of you who were worried that I had been eaten by a bear or been abducted by space aliens you can relax, I am fine. But sadly my computer is not. It has been crashing intermittently over the last week. When it does it takes me quite a while to get it back. So I have been trying to get my work done and turning it off to rest it in between. That meant not much time for posting. But I will be taking it in to Apple tomorrow. The good news is that it is still under extended warranty. The bad news is that until I get it back my posting abilities may be curtailed a bit. Have patience though, hopefully I will get this straightened out for good and get back to my normal routine of posting every couple of days.
