On Hunkering Down And Cleaning Up

Sorry for the strange post yesterday. I was trying to blog from my cell phone in the Boiceville Supermarket parking lot and the stupid device types random things and then will not let me edit. Oh well, now I am in Kingston at the library so I can give you all a more complete account of Hurricane Sandy here in the valley.

The winds and rain started slowly and came in bands. True to what the local experts predicted, it was more of a wind event then a rain event. We probably got several inches of rain but it fell over a long period of time and it was definitely not in the amounts that we saw with Hurricane Irene. The WV Creek and the Esopus rose but not substantially.

The power went out about 2:00 pm but then came back on for an hour or so. I thought we would have more time before we lost it completely but that didn't turn out to be true. When the lights went out the second time they went out for good.

The worst of the storm came between 6 and midnight. The winds really picked up around 7:00pm and got crazy for a few hours. At times it sounded like a freight train coming through the valley. Trees and tree limbs rained down all over Woodland Valley Road. The road was closed and impassable for several hours.

Earlier in the day one of my friends in the valley told me that her friend from Louisiana had called and told her to do what they do in a storm, which is, have a "hunker down" party. They watch the weather channel and every time the announcer says "hunker down" they have a shot. Right about 8:00pm in a very strong and sustained gust of wind I heard a huge crash and something hit my house with a large bang. My house shook. I was truly terrified. In those few seconds God clearly said to me "hunker down"! So despite my disapproving attitude regarding drinking alone, I walked straight to my liquor cabinet and did a shot of vodka. I thought if I was going to die I should at least be a little happier!

Anyway, the alcohol gave me the courage to go outside and see what happened. Turns out a big tree fell and snapped the utility pole on the road in front of my house sending the transformer down near the road. It ripped the mast with the electric out of my roof (which is what I heard) and bent the pole. The good part of all this is that it happened after the power was already off. Had it happened when the power was still on there may have been a fire.

It was a long night waiting for the next tree to fall. Thankfully only a few more small ones did. The highway department came through somewhere between 10 and 11, and, in the pouring rain, pushed aside the debris and made the road passable for emergency vehicles.  I must admit I had to "hunker down" one more time so I could get some sleep. But things were better by morning.

Don't be too alarmed by the photo above. There were only a few scenerios like this in the valley. All the homes I can see from the road seem fine, although there are a lot of downed trees. You should have your neighbors check for tree damage when you get the chance.

We are still without power and phone and the Shandaken website says that may be true for 2-3 days more. The lines are damaged in a lot of places. But the cleanup has started and shouldn't take too long. All in all this storm was much less damaging for our area than hurricane Irene. I would say we dodged a bullet this time. I have begun to clean up the mess at my house and everyone else is doing the same.

My most heartfelt thanks go out to all the emergency responders (police, ambulance and fire fighters), highway department personal, and power company workers who risk their own lives in situations like this to help others! They are truly brave and dedicated people!! And, as a final note, I would like to send out my thoughts and prayers to all our friends and loved ones in southern NY and NJ who are facing much more challenging conditions.

Nerve Wracking Evening

The power and phone went out last night just as I finished the previous post. It rained on and off all the evening but there wasn't much accumulation. The WV creek stayed well within. It'sbanks.he winds were intense aat times. There are many treesdown in the valley. The road was impassible for awhile. The highway department worked very hard to clean things up quickly. But the power and p hone are still out and will remain out for quite a while. everything is getting back to normal (sort of). Sorry for this want to this wonky post I am blogging from my phone in Boiceville. So except for the power and phone outages and clean up from fallen trees everything is OK here.

Power And Phone Back

I don't know how long I will have the chance to blog so I wanted to let you all know that when I returned home from Boiceville just now both the power and phone had been restored. I don't know how long that will last. I am especially worried since a fairly large pine tree has broken in two and is sitting on the wires just before my driveway.

Coming home right now there was woody debris all over the road. As the wind increases I think we will see a lot more of that. What I have been hearing consistently from the local authorities is that they expect this to be more of a wind event than a rain event for our area. So far that seems to be the case. I guess we will have to wait and see if that continues to be true.

I will update you again when I can. Stay safe and dry!

Power And Phone Out

The wind and the rain have started to hit this area. So far it hasn't been too bad but the power and phone have gone out in Woodland Valley. At this point it's been more wind than rain. I don't know when I'll be able to blog again. Stay safe and dry.

Waiting For The Storm

Right now we are experiencing the proverbial "calm before the storm" here in the valley. Everything is very quiet. We haven't gotten any wind or rain yet. At this point the bulk of the storm is just starting to hit the coast and it remains south and west of us.

I have posted several official announcements from the school, town and county below. So continue to read down through the different posts from today for more information.

As long as we don't lose power I will continue to update you through the storm. If I haven't posted for longer than 24 hours you can assume the power is out in the valley.

Stay safe and warm wherever you have chosen to ride out the weather!!

Shandaken Declares A State of Emergency

STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED

The Town of Shandaken at 12:00pm (Noon) today is declaring a State of Emergency for the entire municipality.

Following a meeting with emergency personnel this morning, the Town has declared a State of Emergency due to possible threats from Hurricane Sandy and its remnants. Residents are advised the Town is expecting high wind gusts up to 70 mph starting Sunday evening through the night into Monday October 29. High winds may cause downed trees and power lines due to already saturated soil conditions. We are also anticipating rain beginning light overnight and becoming heavier throughout the day on Monday until afternoon on Tuesday when rains are expected to continue, but lighten up.
Residents are asked to stock up on supplies (water, food, medical supplies, flashlights, batteries and fuel (vehicles and home)) as best they can prior to the event. Residents in flood-prone areas are asked to be on alert and, if feeling threatened, should try to evacuate to higher ground. Belleayre Mountain will open as an emergency shelter on Monday to house residents overnight, if needed. Residents that are in need of emergency assistance or in need of special assistance in order to evacuate should contact the Shandaken Police Department at 688-9902. Emergency information and supplies will be available at your local firehouse beginning Monday.

Emergency crews will be monitoring the situation throughout the Town over the next several hours. If you hear the fire alarm sound throughout the Town, the Firehouses will be manned to assist any resident or visitor.

Information will be posted at your firehouse as well as on the Town website and Facebook page as we progress. Please check on neighbors to help us expedite door-to-door checks, if necessitated.
Starting Monday morning (8am) residents can call the Town Clerks Office (845) 688-5004 for more information.

Please be diligent and please stay safe!

Message From Art Snyder

Here is the latest message from Art Snyder. It was sent at 4:12pm today.

Good afternoon

Not too much has changed with the forecast since yesterday. We are still expecting a 3" rain event, higher amounts in the mountains (up to 6" or so). A flood watch remain in effect from Monday into Tuesday. Areas mentioned in previous reports continue to be of concern. Additionally, the combined effects of tidal influences with high river levels focus concern on areas like downtown Kingston.

We are now under a high wind warning. Sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with 60 MPH gusts (70 in the mountains) are still expected. Note that the winds will come from the east, as opposed to normal westerly direction. This will stress the trees in an unusual manner. The timing of the worst wind and rain will be from Monday afternoon into Monday evening and into Tuesday.

Shelters will be as follows (people need to bring their own bedding and personal hygiene products):
Trudy Farber Resnick building in Ellenville, opening at 8AM Monday.
Mid Town Neighborhood Center in Kingston, opening at 8 AM Monday.
Belleayre Ski Center in Shandaken, opening at 8 AM Monday.
Saugerties Senior Citizens Center opening at 10 AM Monday.
SUNY New Paltz at a time to be determined.

Currently there are states of emergency in effect in Shandaken and Marlboro.

The County's Emergency Operations Center will open at 8 AM on Monday. The County Executive has met with EOC staff.

Governor Cuomo's representative to the Catskill region will be DEC Commissioner Joe Martens.

If municipalities require assistance, please contact the Emergency Management phone line at 331-7000 .

Get Ready For Hurricane Sandy

I was forwarded the following email from Art Snyder with Ulster County Emergency Communications/ Emergency Management regarding Hurricane Sandy. Although the exact track of the storm is still taking shape I wanted to send this out and remind everyone to be sure to prepare your homes for the possible high winds and water as Mr Snyder suggested.

If the storm does hit our area and you need emergency assistance go to the MF Whitney Fire Company located at 58 Rt 214 - 688-7315. If the need arises they will also be using The Phoenicia School but go to the fire house first to check.

As we all learned with Hurricane Irene, it is always good to be prepared with supplies and a plan in place. If bad weather hits I will keep you informed here on the Woodland Valley Blog (to the best of my ability).

Stay safe and dry.
Best,
Carol Seitz

Subj: Hurricane Sandy

Good afternoon
Hurricane Sandy is getting a lot of media attention based on similarities to "the perfect storm" and other significant late season events. It is still very early to accurately project the timing, track and possible impacts. However, at this early stage, here is a compilation of information from the National Weather Service offices in Binghamton and Albany, as well as the National Hurricane Center.
  • Model trends are toward an east coast landing Monday or Tuesday. This could be anywhere from New Brunswick to the Chesapeake Bay. However, the official track of the storm by the National Hurricane Center now indicates a possible landfall in New Jersey on Tuesday.
  • If the storm does hit this general area, expect strong gusty winds which will lead to widespread power outages, possible flash flooding and potential river flooding, and even the possibility of snow (although this appears to be an outlier possibility at this time).
  • Most areas of the County have received between 3 and 5.5" of rain thus far in October.
  • Currently the Ashokan Reservoir is at 77.8% of capacity and the Rondout is at 95.2%.
  • There are multiple scenarios! Recall that during Irene a "last minute" change in course had a significant impact on our area.
  • It is certainly not too early to "get a kit, make a plan, and stay informed". Have a supply of nonperishable foods and water on hand along with a sufficient quantify of medications, Determine if your home is storm ready - are the gutters cleaned out, tie down or bring in outdoor furniture, etc. Monitor local weather forecasts on this developing situation.

Joe DeSarle - Dec 7th - Red Bank NJ

Singer, songwriter, WCA member and all around nice guy Joe DeSarle wrote to me recently about an exciting gig he is going to be part of in NJ. Here is what Joe had to say.

"I entered a competition of professional singers to perform at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, N.J. I learned last month that I was selected to perform on December 7th at the Sinatra Birthday Bash at the Count Basie theatre with their 17 piece jazz orchestra."

Here are the details:

The 6th Annual Sinatra Birthday Bash

On Sale to The Public Friday 9/28 at Noon
Friday, December 07, 2012, 8:00 PM
Presented by: Count Basie Theatre,  99 Monmouth Street  Red Bank, New Jersey 07701    (732) 224-8778
An annual tribute to Frank Sinatra on his birthday weekend (this year would have been his 97th), the Sinatra Birthday Bash stars a selection of NY & NJ’s finest working saloon singers, selected by audition and backed by the Red Bank Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece professional Big Band under the Musical Direction of Joe Muccioli, who Jazzwise Magazine says works with “a maximum of authenticity.” Singing the great songs associated with Sinatra’s career, the Birthday Bash is not a costume and wig show, but a sincere, respectful tribute to one of NJ’s favorite sons, starring this year: James Anthony (Falls Church), Rebecca Orsatti (Atlantic City), Nancy Nelson (Bernardsville), Kelly Ross (Red Bank), Daniel Pugliese (Westfield), Tony Corrao (Marlboro), Joe Minnella (Tinton Falls), Bob Tuzzo (Middletown), Joe DeSarle (Staten Island) , Elya Vasiliev (Morganville).

Peak Colors Here In The Catskills

The past week has been gorgeous here in the Catskills. After a slow start the leaves have  finally hit their peak. The weather for the most part has been great too. Although we have seen some clouds, we have also seen beautiful sunny days with highs in the 60's. All in all I think it has been a glorious fall season. So get out there and enjoy the colors before they are all gone!

Blog Turns 5

Today is the fifth anniversary of the Woodland Valley View. It seems like only yesterday that I was telling people about the idea I had for creating this site. In general, I think most people thought I was nuts. I remember getting a lot of  "great, but I'm never going to read it" looks from people when I tried to explain my idea for a local community blog. My thought was that it would be a good old-fashioned newsletter but in an updated digital form. My hope for it was that better communication would bring the community together in new and stronger ways. So far the project has exceeded my wildest dreams.

I don't really know how long I thought I would continue to maintain this site when I first started. I didn't really think about it. I still don't really know. But one thing I do know is WHY I decided to do it.

Basically there are two reasons. The first is because I deeply believe in service to something beyond yourself.  And I could see clearly how providing local information in a clear, positive way would help everyone.

The second reason is because I LOVE our community.  Several friends who have visited me recently have helped me figure out exactly what makes this town so special. One friend came here for a day on her way somewhere else. She looked around, remarked on how beautiful it was and then just kept going. After she left I thought to myself that she didn't stay long enough to find out about the real beauty of the town, the people.

Another friend (who is in her 70's) visited from suburban New Jersey and remarked. "You all live in the old way here". What she meant was that we all know each other, rely on each other and help each other. If you want to find out how true that is here just break down on the road, or lose your dog, or get sick or hurt. You will have 20 people within an hour willing to give you a hand. No thanks necessary. Everyone's turn to need help comes, everyone's turn to give help comes, That is just the way of it.

That friend saw the real beauty and the reason why I am so happy to call this place home. Don't get me wrong, we disagree. Sometimes we even argue. But we fight because we care so much. And we are a big family here and in every family you have to expect an occasional conflict. But what matters is that we care about each other and prove it everyday with our actions. And that is what makes me love this community so much and why I continue to serve it by writing this blog.

Keeping this site requires a lot of time and effort. I could not and would not continue to do it without the help of all the folks who contribute content to this blog. So let me extend my deepest thanks to all of you who regularly send me things to post. Let's see how long we can keep this thing going! Happy 5th birthday Woodland Valley View!

More Information On Sagitah Restaurant

WCA member and local historian Linda McDonald wrote to fill me in on what she knows about the Sagitah restaurant. I was hoping that she had time to share her valley memories with us. Here is what she had to say.

"As a child the name reminded me of Succotash (which I didn't like at all!). I have been coming to Woodland since 1948 and I remember in the early 50's, knowing we were almost home, on a Fri night, because you could see the lights of Sagitah, up on top of the hill there, as you came past Charlotte Jacobsen's, just past Krista Wrixen's house. The two big stone columns are still there, but those were always lit, too.
By about 1966 (or so) it had closed and Charlotte & Andy Jacobsen had bought the property and used to rent it out, as a summer cottage or cottages. Friends of my parents rented there about 1968 and that was the first time I got to go to the top of the road and see what it looked like from up there. It was a beautiful view then (may be all over grown by now?) It was called Sky High for a time, too. I don't know when it changed hands from the Jacobsen's or how many times, but I believe it is presently owned by the Knapp Family."
- Linda

PS - For those of you who don't know the people that Linda is referencing the old restaurant property is one driveway before the Holz farm on the same side of the street.

Sagitah Restaurant

After a long hiatus from WV history I have something cool from the past to post. WCA member Krista Wrixon sent me this postcard of a restaurant that once existed in the upper part of the valley. I don't know when the establishment was in operation. Perhaps some other WV folks can fill in the blanks. Here is Krista's message.

"This postcards of Sagitah Restaurant were passed onto me 29 years ago when we bought our house from Edward Eisenstein. The Sagitah Restaurant was in WV, it was located two driveways past me on the right. I also have a painting of it that hangs in my house. Thought it might be of interest to share.

Hope everyone is enjoying this great weather!"

- Krista

Rick Altman Trio at Harmony 10/28

Here is a message from Rick Altman about his upcoming show at the Harmony in Woodstock. Here is what Rick had to say about the show:

The Rick Altman Trio is doing something different at the Harmony in Woodstock Sunday, October 28th at @8 PM.

Instead of playing the vibes as I usually do, I'll be bringing my custom-made Grand Concert Marimba.  This may be the first time anyone has played a marimba in this room.  It was made with exotic woods and took a year to complete.  This instrument does not have the vocal qualities of the vibes, so we have to reconsider our choice of compositions.   We will play some of our usual material and some compositions that we haven't before.  Please click on this link to see some pictures of it http://rickaltman.com/photo_album2.html

Also, Mike DeMicco, one of my favorite guitarists, has just returned from Russia and will be with us once again.  Mike always kicks the band up several notches and makes me glad I don't play the guitar.  We are hoping to include some of Mike's compositions this night.
You can see more photos, read about my instruments and watch videos at:   www.rickaltman.com  I hope to see you there.

First Frost

Well it's finally happened. With temperatures dropping down into the mid-twenties last night we got our first frost of the season. Thank goodness I was able to get most of my more delicate plants inside the house. The weather is supposed to warm back up rather quickly. Looking at the extended forecast we are going to have temperatures in the 60s during the day and the 40s at night for the next ten days. Hopefully we will be spared the really cold temps for a while yet. But looks like I am going back to posting frequently about the weather. Let's hope like last winter it isn't too bad and I don't have too much to say.

Lonnie Gale Passes

Normally I only post the announcements of passings within Woodland Valley. But every once in a while someone dies who is a friend to so many people in the valley that I feel it is important. Lonnie Gale is one of those people. Lonnie died this past Wednesday at the age of 85. He loved history and shared his knowledge of Shandaken and the railroad with many, many people. Gorgeous Photos of WV Fog

The fog across the valley a few mornings ago was absolutely beautiful. Rolf Reiss sent me these photos that he took. Here is the explanation Rolf sent with the shots.

"I have attached a few photos taken from my front porch on Thursday afternoon. The low lying areas were engulfed in fog and the sun came out for a short while before setting."

Nice job Rolf! Thanks for sharing!

Reading At The ESRM This Sunday

At The EMPIRE STATE RAILWAY MUSEUM this Sunday

A talk and book signing by the author
Marie Betts Bartlett
at the Phoenicia RR Station Museum - Free!
12 noon on Sunday, the 7th of October

The Little Yellow Trolley Car is the true story of a little trolley who brought passengers and freight from one small town to another between 1896 and 1927. The book has bold, colorful paper cut illustrations and uses engaging sounds of the trolley's travels to describe her long ago life in operation, sitting in a farmer's yard for sixty years, and the sounds of her restoration. You can cheer with her crowd of passengers when at last she runs again!

The book will particularly appeal to ages 2-8 and to the adults who read with those young people!

We will be running our MINI RR TRAINS (for exhibition) mid-day, all weekend.
The ESRM is free but donations are certainly welcome.

2013 Preliminary Town Budget

Anyone who would like to view the 2013 Shandaken preliminary town budget can do so at:
http://www.shandaken.us/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/2013-12-Town-of-Shandaken-Preliminary-Budget-Comparison-10-2-12.pdf.
I am not sure how long the budget will stay up on the site so you might want to visit it sooner rather than later. I think every citizen should look this over so we can all be fully informed as to where our tax dollars are spent.

Notary Public At Town Hall

Town Clerk Joyce Grant has just become an official NYS Notary Public. Jacqui Guglielmetti and Amie Goodrich, who also work in the Town Clerks office, are also certified. That means that if you need anything notarized during office hours (Monday-Friday 9-4) someone is always available at Town Hall.

Reminder - Non-Violent Communication Group

For those of you who missed this the first time I am it again. Davida Luminabes is re-starting her non-violent communication group. If you would like to join please contact Davida  at the address below.

Here is Davida's message:

Greetings friends and neighbors

We had a lovely practice group before last winter, and keeping it small seems to work best.
We're starting over this year into next with a new practice group and format, a shorter, 9-week course.

You may be familiar, new or practiced in the ways of "Non-Violent Communication", or compassionate communication. It is a way of communicating with ourselves and with each other which works through compassion, shifting us (with practice) from the old ingrained  criticism/'shame/blame/judgement/should  patterns of thinking and speech, better meeting our truest needs in life.

It is a system being used in interpersonal relationships from personal partnerships to family, from business to mediation between nations.

I've been studying this past year and 1/4 (and continuing) with NYNVC Co-ordinator Thom Bond.

The '64 days training' is a 9-week training course which meets once a week. It's been put together by Thom Bond, a student and friend of Marshall Rosenberg, the Author of Non-Violent Communication. This course is for anyone who is willing to make a personal commitment to learn the principles and concepts of NVC and begin to incorporate them into daily life.

Whether new, familiar, or practiced, you are invited and welcome!

When we have a core group minimum (we're going only up to 8 max), we will announce a definite time/place start date. As a starter, I'm suggesting sunday evenings, here at my home in Woodland Valley, skipping holidays, starting the last Sunday of September.

Study Books:

·   Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life, by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D.

See website for ordering http://www.cnvc.org/bookstore/cnvc-store-printed-items. Powell’s books (union) and Amazon (non-union) may carry them second hand. They are available from the Mid-Hudson Library System as well.
No required fee. Donations accepted/suggested, to course co-ordinator org. Host to provide water and a pot of coffee, tea, and simple refreshments.

Directions, curriculum and a reminder will be forthcoming for those who respond. Please feel welcome to join in a pot - luck before or after the meetings.. (we'll decide).
